Pondlife Set-up & macro

My set-up for pondlife macro:
Larva(?) held in plastic dish, black card under.
K7, Pentax Auto Bellows M, 100 D FA Macro, "use of aperture ring enabled", f16.(Bellows used for the focus-rail, rather than for much extension).
Slik tripod, Redsnapper ball-head.
AF200t flash, manual, 1/4 power, 7DayShop flash lead.
Kindle reading light used for focus-light.

Unknown pondlife, 10mm in length.

Any help with identification would be very welcome!

I think this is 1st instar - very difficult to identify - any chance of a few more pics showing tail detail and head detail - ru=ight now I will stick my neck out and say its a fly, no help at all!

I Googled Images for culex larva, Jeeess, but not too sure....

"mine" seems to have more of a fan structure at the end, rather than that classic angled-tube arrangement for breathing through the surface film.....?
And the head-end looks narrower / more pointed.....?

RCA, can you narrow it down from "a Fly" ?

The image is rather startling. I am not a fan of wildlife photography in general, I appreciate it is challenging but I often think, great photo but nothing new.

I have never seen the likes of this before though.

No idea what the beastie is, but I wouldn't want to find one in my boots.

Looks as if it MIGHT be a gnat lava, but then a lot of lavae look pretty much the same.

Gnat larvae wiggle a lot, by the way

It's a Phantom Midge larva, Chaoborus obscuripes (!)
