Hi folks, I ma new to the forum and have a Pentax Z1 using 35mm film. The camera is fantastic and in perfect working order as new. I still have original box, packaging and manual. Now we have kids, I tend to use digital only and feel it is a shame to let this sit around unused. Any idea what the value would be, I am thinking of selling on ebay.

Welcome to the forum.

I suggest starting it at around £20 and seeing where it goes. There is always some risk in this that it might sell for just £20, but it hasn't been a problem so far in my own experience.

Don't forget to let us have a link so that anyone interested here can think whether or not they want to bid.

There is also a Classifieds section on this forum, but for a new poster you might or might not get the best return via that route as nobody knows you yet!

Hopefully you'll join in the various discussions soon.
Best regards, John

The Z1 was the top of the range at the time of release, unfortunately £20 seems to be roughly the going rate for them now.

If you do list it on ebay make sure you include the lens details - ie a title along the lines of "Pentax Z-1 with 28-80mm f3.5-4.7" or whatever lens was supplied with yours. I frequently see lenses go for more than a camera/lens combo and many people here have a selection of old film bodies that they bought for the attached lenses. By including this information your listing will appear when people search for the lens as well as the camera.

Thanks for the advice guys. That's a shame because if I remember correctly in cost approxiamtely £1000 at the time. It's such a great machine. I'll have a mull over it and put it on ebay. I'll post the link on here.

The alternative would be to hang onto it, get some slide film (Boots still sell it) and get back into film over the summer. If home developing black and white appeals then look up the thread about Rondinax daylight developing tanks - armed with one of those and a negative scanner you don't need a darkroom to develop film.

Film camera value is an odd one. Generally, KX, K2, KM, MX, ME Super and LX seem to be popular. K1000s are too for some odd reason. I used one for years, so I'm amply qualified to say that I wish I'd been able to afford an MX or KX instead!

Auto Focus bodies are less popular aside from the top spec MZ-S, unless it has a rare or good quality lens included. I've seen SFXs rocket up to £100+ before now because they have a 50mm prime attached to them, normally they go for about £20 body only.

Sounds like it's hardly worth selling at such a low price. I'd sell the lens separately (show it mounted on your DSLR!)

Personally I'd stick a film in it and use it! If you don't have a film scanner you can get companies like Peak Imaging to dev, print and scan and thus have the best of both worlds. Not cheap, however. Developing your own is probably the way to go if you have some means to scan them.

Best wishes, Kris.

Lots of film bodies, a couple of digital ones, too many lenses (mainly older glass) and a Horseman LE 5x4.

I agree with Kris.

The value now is nowhere near what it should be. Keep the body and use it occasionally.

If you fancy developing your own film there's a bit of info on this thread and this film scanner works OK.

Well, SRS are selling one for £89 and a Z1-p for the same price.
I paid £40 for my Z1-p body a few weeks ago from LCE in Bath with 6 mth warranty-bargain I thought.
Why not sell it on the forum,I would suggest £40 is fair.
Like others have said though, put some film in it, put a decent lens on it and I'm sure you will be happy with the results.

Chris

Okay, thanks for all the advice. I have a colleague at work who wants to take a look at it. He's a photography fan for over 40 years so I'll see if he wants it or what his valuation is and pop it on ebay. Many thanks for all the honest opinions

Hi and welcome,
I have to agree with Kris as well. I would'nt sell it for that price. You could use it just for slides and have scans made as well. There's still nothing quite like a slide show on a big screen. For scans, you should check out Scan Cafe. Their prices are very low and the quality is very good, highly recommended.
