Maybe that thing *is* the K-5 replacement

Azzhat...oops...typo...I mean Ricehigh is already bichin about it and something about the end of the world and Pentax and is looking to buy a k-5, despite what he's been sayin abou the k5 for last year or two..

Interesting colour range... black and white, white and black, black and yellow.

59mm width's a bit fat though! I'm trying to imagine what my K7 would look like without the pentaprism or the big grip...

so what if chubby... have you ever looked at how thick the sonys are at the grip?

when it comes to pocketability... it's the thickest part of the camera that has to fit is it not?
then add an adaptor for a kmount lens and it should be pretty obvious that a nex7 or 5n is gonna ring in bigger than this pentax! and coupling it with a reworked 40mm pancake! Brilliant!
if this leads to a kmount cam that can record video for 2 hours at some point in the near future, I can finally dump sony!

It's a difficult one to visualise. Intriguing though, presumably it would be 5.9cm at the widest part- perhaps it still has substantial grip. The K5 isnt 5.9cm across the main part of the body I dont think and you would assume it is smaller than the K5 in all directions.

Some hilarious "I wont buy this" comments on the link. Maybe wait and see!

The K5 is about 6.1cm thick - counting the lens mount, but ignoring the grip.

I'm not really sure what the point of mirrorless is, apart from smaller - which has never really bothered me anyway. A digital viewfinder (or non TTL optical) would certainly put me off.

Am I missing some other clear advantage of going mirrorless?

Right now I can't see this being much more than marketing hype. I'm not saying Pentax shouldn't be doing this - just, I think I'll ultimately still upgrade to the K5, even if prices were equal.

Well it just shows how things can be deceiving- it doesnt feel as big as 6cm looks if you know what I mean.

I guess that would make sense with the registration distance of the lens though.

yes you are. evf's will surpass optical viewfinders in every way, some already are (sony nex 7) and
the elimination of the mechanical bits opens the doors to faster burst rates, flash sync at ALL shutter speeds and more.... plus they'll be cheaper to make ultimately resulting in both lower prices and higher profit margins..

Don - ok, I'll have to try some new generation EVFs for myself. I'm unsure how digital can surpass optical but I'm willing to give it a try.

However, I see your points regarding burst rates (assuming the media can keep up) and flash sync, cost etc.

It'll be interesting to see how things progress

google sony's new high speed sd card format they're trying to push as a standard... then compare those read write speeds to apples new thunderbold system..

look at the nex 7 evf..

then imagine the next k5 replacement having 24mp stills and 4k video...
and it'll all make perfect sense why they are going the direction they are going..

Less mechanical parts also means less vibration and sharper pictures. They're possibly also taking the shutter out of the equation, thinking back to Mr. Kitazawa. As well as eliminating shutter blur entirely, that would open up insanely fast burst rates... Ultra fast burst rates is a bit of a Ricoh speciality and they can use it to capture the same shot several times and then process the captures into one image with less noise, more detail, and more dynamic range. Sony's also doing quite a bit of this but Ricoh pretty much pioneered it.

I await the hottest Pentax feature they have yet to develop..
using the sensor shift stabilization and high burst rate to add built in camera resolution multiplying...
in other words..
stacking multiple images in camera with a slight pixle shift between shots to increase final resolution..
40 or more mp stills in studio.... off a 16 mp sensor...
