"Dear Mr Mills,

I've heard back from Pentax today and they have confirmed that the warrenty on the Q is only 12 months. We will still be able to send the camera off for you but it will be chargable.

If you have any further questions please don't hesitate to contact me

Kind regards

Clearly there is confusion over this. I never confirmed the warranty at the time (there appears to me no information anyway), my understanding was the the Pentax Pro Dealer warranty was two years so I felt no need to check. When the pre-eminent Pentax retailer in the country, SRS, thinks that too and every other Pentax user I know of then I can't really kick myself about it.

I am not happy though.
Park cameras trying to fob someone off over a warranty? There's a surprise. I bought a tripod off their Birdfair stall and after a few months the joints and legs/arms started slipping or locking up, no matter how I adjusted the screws, I tried emailing several times, usually without reply, 1 that did said sorry we get lots of emails and then didn't reply after!

They are just not interested once they have your money. Steer clear of Park Cameras is my advice!

In Australia, consumers still have rights on items which develop faults outside of manufacturers warranties, items which would normally be expected to last more than 1 year.

I am pretty up to speed with the Sale of Goods Act in the UK and the procedures required. My first ever digital camera, a Canon G3, was purchased at Park Cameras, their original shop in Burgess Hill. I like them so it would be a shame to have to resort to litigation. I await to hear what Chris of SRS has to say about Pentax's take on it since the retailer passes on the manufacturer's warranty and the confusion is all about what exactly the manufacturer's warranty is.

It's easy to say in hindsight that you should have checked the warranty at the time of purchase, but as I've bought almost all of my new gear from a local retailer (Wilkinson Cameras) that has given me a 3 year warranty on almost everything (most recently my MX-1), I'd just assume all good retailers would do the same.

The only time I've needed a Pentax repair (broken zoom switch on an FA28-80 PZ lens well outside the first 12 months) they arranged the repair without any problems.

No reply from Park Cameras, so I will wait to see if any news from Chris. Looks like I will have to warn people to watch out for this when buying from Pro Dealers.

It's very annoying to support a Pentax Pro Dealer and then find you would have got a better warranty from John Lewis.

Clifton Cameras give a 2 year warranty on everything.....
but it gets complicated if the manufacturer also gives a
2 year warranty..... You have to prove that you registered
it with the manufacturer

I've never dealt with them so I'm not commenting on what
their service is like if you have to return faulty goods.

There isn't a registration card with the Q. The warranty just specifies sending in a copy of proof of purchase.

There's no requirement to register in the UK. As long as you have your invoice then that's all the proof of purchase you need.
Best regards, John
