Well done! But, just in case, SRS are selling new bodies for £60-70

Seeing the results from this little gem and the enormous drop in price has had me dithering over the last few weeks, problems is I already have far more cameras than I can effectively put to good use, the Q would just make another of them redundant

It's an agonisingly low price that is hard to resist. I have a feeling that eventually the value of this first model will go up considerably.

Nice one. I suspect ( as someone who used to repair electronic music equipment years ago ) that the cause of the problem was a dry joint, or a connector not seating properly and the very slight movement of you trying to dismantle it has reseaeted the connection.

be aware it's possible that the problem might happen again. But fingers crossed it won't

I take it that it is out of warranty but if you bought it from a Pentax Pro dealer then the warranty is two years. The official Pentax service agent is here link

Please let us know how you get on
That's what I thought. It doesn't seem to be what all Pro dealers think, nor Johnsons. I'm trying to clarify it - not easy.

"Dear Mr Mills,

I've heard back from Pentax today and they have confirmed that the warrenty on the Q is only 12 months. We will still be able to send the camera off for you but it will be chargable.

If you have any further questions please don't hesitate to contact me

Kind regards

Park Cameras"

Clearly there is confusion over this. I never confirmed the warranty at the time (there appears to me no information anyway), my understanding was the the Pentax Pro Dealer warranty was two years so I felt no need to check. When the pre-eminent Pentax retailer in the country, SRS, thinks that too and every other Pentax user I know of then I can't really kick myself about it.

I am not happy though.

I wonder whether the shops themselves choose (or not) to underwrite the 2nd year of warranty(?). It is certainly one of SRS's selling points, prominently used by them. As you say, Park Cameras is seemingly entirely silent on its website about warranty matters, other than encouraging customers to leave the retailer out of any warranty matters and contact the manufacturer's repair centre direct -- for the sake, it writes, of expedition.

It may be of course that, regardless of warranty, you still have some rights against the retailer. Depends whether you want to divert energy, time etc to slogging it out.

But perhaps Park Cameras will be embarrassed into offering the same service as their rival. Wouldn't do for it to get around that Park Camera's offers the lesser deal.

Just read the other thread on this. Amazing that SRS offers the 2yr warranty (certainly likely to be considered a matter of contract) yet Pentax seem uncertain.

Well it is amazing. And I would guess that just about every customer thinks that the 2 year Pro Dealer warranty applies to Q cameras.

If Pentax are only offering 12 months then I'm sure it will come as a surprise to some retailers too, which is doubly amazing.

For a lightly used, well looked after, expensive camera (and remember the launch price) then I would expect more than a year's service so I would have to consider my options. I have owned 7 Pentax cameras of which 5 have been faulty/developed catastrophic faults quickly. I deserve a break.

It would be good to get to the bottom of what the erstwhile 2 year warranty actually once said. I'm sure there must be something in writing somewhere.

Chris from SRS is looking into it on the other thread on this subject, so the answer should be with us soon.

On the reliability front I have to remark that I have owned, I think, eleven and the only ones to develop faults have to be put down to fair wear and tear from fairly heavy professional use. Both were repaired by Pentax and I don't remember the cost being unreasonable. However in these digital days, sadly we have a totally different financial scenario

I totally acknowledge that my experience is unrepresentative and that as a brand Pentax are well made and reliability seems good in comparison with other brands, all of which have their problems too.

Everyone has a different personal experience. Mine has been unfortunate.

The point of this is to know where one stands with a purchase. If I had been aware that the warranty were only 12 months then I would have considered an extended warranty, I would have purchased elsewhere or maybe a different make altogether. When there are differences of opinion between retailers and where lomg standing Pentax customers are similarly mistaken then there is something not at all right.

Do not be fobbed off by the retailer when they try and refer you direct to Pentax. Your contract is with the retailer NOT the manufacturer.

Also, whether the warranty has expired or not, the Sale of Goods Act requires the retailer to be responsible for the costs of repair or replacement for any goods that fail within the reasonably expected life of the product on a pro-rated basis. This means that after the first year the retailer would be responsible for 5/6 of the cost. After two years, 4/6, and so on. For electrical goods the courts usually take 6 years to be a reasonable expectation of 'life'.

Of course it may take some considerable effort on your part to get the retailer to accept that and so you have to decide how much work you are prepared to invest.
I wish .....
