I found this link to a DPR review which compares the 2 models link
I don't have the Ist*D s but I do have the original Ist*D and the L version . For me the original Ist*D has the more robust build quality and from that aspect is closer in feel to the K10D.

The K10D is an all round better camera than the DS.

I have both istD and DS and I love working with both of them. The DS has the advantage of accepting both TTL and PTTL flash protocols. Both are capable of fantastic results but don't get carried away by modern facilities (which we tend to take for granted). They are NOT weatherproof and their high ISO results do leave room for improvement. Use them within sensible limits and they are super cameras.

Got the istD S earlier today. It's in very good condition, but I had to clean the battery contact areas to get it to 'boot up'.
Firmware is 2.02, which should be the latest.
As far as I can see, the RAW format can't be changed from PEF to DNG.
Can anyone confirm this limitation?
On another note, I'm having trouble mapping the ISO setting to one of wheels. Any inputs as how to do this? I did it with the D10, but can't remember how ;(

One point to note on the istD is that it uses CF cards rather then SD cards.

On the topic of battery terminals, Do clean them with (e.g.) a pencil eraser but also, make sure they are bent upwards (outwards?) so that they will press firmly on the battery caps when the door is closed. Frequent use tends to depress them over time until they can barely make proper contact, when things like 'depleted battery' can appear when you know they are freshly charged. It drove me crazy until I realised what was happening.

Experienced exactly this problem. The camera was totally dead, but cleaning the terminals helped.

As some of you have noticed, I'm impressed with what the K10D can do.
So I read up on the history of Pentax' early DSLRs, and decided to get an istD too and after seenig in the gallery what that camera can do.
I hadn't noticed that there are different versions.
I got the istD S - but retrospectively should have gotten a the istD, I think.
This leads to my question: Do the istD and istD s use the same sensor (and in the same implemetation)?
And is the build quality between the two different? the istD looks very similar to the D10.
I'll receive the the istD S tomorrow or the day after.
