Pentax Full Frame Comment

I agree that most of us do not need a FF camera, in fact we do not need the next APS-C camera either, or many of the lenses we buy. But still, as new cameras and lenses are released we do buy them and appreciate the improved specs. Every new high(er) end Pentax camera that has been released in the past few years has been the ultimate camera..... but then not. I am sure the next flagship Pentax camera will have improvements we will all praise.

There is a claim about APS-C now having a comparable IQ to FF. There is a similar claim by micro 4/3 manufacturers that m43 sensors have now reached APS-C IQ...... I think that each format has advantages and disadvantages and there are some areas where FF would be better than APS-C. We might not just need that.

But then there is another consideration. Pentax, as a camera company, is not about having satisfied customers who are so happy about their gear that they do not to buy anything else. It is about selling a lot of new cameras and lenses. Just like everyone else. So they need to release products that photographers perceive are better than anything else they have had before and they absolutely need, and a strong brand.

I look forward to see in what Pentax will release next, I hope it will be something exciting that we all will agree we absolutely need!

Seems to me that Ricoh is on a hiding to nothing here! Whatever they bring out will be "too little too late" to stop the mad exodus to the Canikon Eos D610 thousand million!

If it's a FF all the Current Pentax users who don't feel they need it will be sore, if it's a 20Mp APSC, all those who want the former will sell up and go, as one who has owned nearly every FF camera thats been out except a 5DMKIII and a Sony A99, I've come back to pentax, maybe at the best time maybe at the worst time? The D600 was my last straw with FF and Nikon in particular, I still reckon the 5DMKIII to be the mmost complete camera out there but I'd put my K5IIs as second! The D600 has problems that are not all associated with the sensor dust and the oil slick that puts the K5 stain issues into the shade, in fact it rivals the Torrey Canyon there! It feels in the hand lie a cheapo peice of plastic in every way that the Pentax k5 doesn't, The D800 is much closer. The D600 has "amaetuer" metering which is completely tied to the focus point which may be fine in a dark club but is totally useless outside, for doing Landscapes etc, I had to turn off the matrix and go back to centre weighted as I could never second guess it, all the digital snake oil in there is working overtime, focus is no quicer than the K5 that I can see and the low light focus does not work as advertised, whereas my K5 can see things that I can't. It's not all roses on the dark side...

To be honest the sooner the better for Pentax to bring out a ff camera, as I a poor amateur, will have some fun in the classified section of this forum

despite the problems with the d600 it still remains a very competant and cheap camera. The k-5 had its own share of sensor stain issues at launch.
Quite. I hear nothing but praise and love from the camera from actual D600 users. Kind of like the K5... there are those who like to shriek and raise a fuss, but real world users seem pretty happy to say the least.

I know a few wedding photographers who have bought two for the price and are very happy with them.

It my be the exact contrary......

If Pentax will release a FF camera, it might revitalise the brand and attract more photographers, and that will also increase sales of crop sensor cameras and therefore also demand for lenses, new and used.

If you want lens bargains, I think you can get them right now as demand for Pentax lenses seems to be very low.

Not sure how you are measuring this, but in terms of selling lenses on eBay the stars are Pentax and Olympus.

I think you might have to explain that comment a bit further, John.

If you navigate using "Shop by Category" to the "Lenses" subcategory on Ebay, there are presently 24,793 results. There are more Canon branded lenses for sale than any other marque (6292), followed by Nikon (4327), Sony(2563), Sigma(2389) and Pentax(2233).

Ah, but when you try to sell them it's the results that count. The prices I get for P and O consistently higher than any other marques, apart from the occasional rare vintage lens of course. The Pentax lenses (and Oly) always sell whereas other marques don't.

We could interpret the figures a number of ways, as it suits us Andrew. We could say there are fewer lenses for sale Pentax fit because users want to keep them, not sell them. We could say it's because not many were ever sold. So the figures themselves don't really mean anything.

Judging from how I'm doing at the moment, the K20D is more highly sought after than the K10D or K7. Next month it might be different, but all Pentax bodies will sell and all Pentax lenses will sell.

I still have Nikon and Minolta lenses and bodies that have failed to sell several times.

The more unusual lenses in every marque will sell though. I've done very well with Exakta recently.
Best regards, John

I think the original comment referred to the classifieds section of this forum. There prices of Pentax lenses seem to be much lower than a year ago, and lenses that would have been taken right away take long to sell. Some examples are there now.

All this talk of full frame has started me thinking about tents

More seriously, currently the IQ of apsc cameras are easily a match for what the majority of us 'need', however, for most the 'want' of a full frame camera is probably more of a draw whilst the 'need' of Cabstar and the likes surely must add up to a tempting prospect for Pentax.

I guess Pentax have to work out if the 'wants' and the 'needs' are strong enough to mean that the punters will pay their hard earned cash for a full frame model - personally I hope it happens soon for those who would buy it.

Myself, I doubt I will as and as such I don't enter the equation
K10D, K5 plus plenty of clueless enthusiasm.

Hmm, With that new Sony 20Mp chip on board, I may not be in, If pricing stratagy is anywhere near, I may just get another IIs at nearly half the price, all remains to be seen of course!
It needs to have a significant AF/Noise/DR/ and Hassy super resolution/Raw HD? or I just can't see me favouring it over my IIs, from what I've seen so far, I'm not going to get any DR this time around, noise, maybe? As for the rest, they would be headline features and no one is going to let them out of the bag until much nearer release day! It may be a happy Christmas for Pentax fans though, also I heard it will have Pentax on the front and Ricoh (Imagine Change) on the back...
That chip is pretty optomised for video, which is something that Ricoh (Imagine Change) needs to address in Pentax's bodies, so it may be a accurate prediction/rumour, Video is not my tihng but others love it, and it's lagging behind in Pentax's latest offerings.
Who knows though maybe there's still some Pentax digital snake oil left lying around after the Ricoh (Imagine Change) takeover?

Interesting qoute off the "Rice High" Blog...
Erm I may be in again!
Usual pinch of white powder required...

"You're such a fun Rice. So did you sell your 21MP 5D Mark Something after the A30000 piece of trash was announced? Is 5DMkXX worth a few thouzand $$ on top of K-3's 20MP or A30000's?
What "source" doesn't mention is the class leading AF, radical increaze in performance, next gen image procezzor that will leave any 5D in dust. Plus a senzor glide shift operating mode to capture 40MP files with amazing clarity — stuff that was rezerved for MF so far. All that using your good DA glass. Now Nikon and Canon will roll in pain, becauze they never invested in body senzor stabilization.
I think many have no idea what they're missing now; many will start selling back their Nikon D600 plasticz to get one of theze babiez."
Cheers Jules...
