Very true John.As I've said before, Pentax have delivered almost everything this forum said it wanted, over the past three or four years it's been a steady trickle.

As I have two K5lls, I think I will hold onto one if I do have to buy a Nikon D610, you never know Pentax just might shock everyone and announce a FF just prior to Christmas. If a model were announced, I would make do with my Pentax APS-C kit and wait for a Pentax FF model. I am certainly developing my processing skills in relation to very high ISO images and giving some full frame shooters a run for their money, but the editing time requires a lot of extra effort.

I'm at a similar crossroads. As fletcher said with the new d610 due i can no longer ignore the ff. Most of my competitors in the pit are shooting 5d mkiii and their images are killing it and i just cannot compete in sharpness and detail with Pentax. So much so i have literally stioped shooting gigs altogether. Ive gone from shooting 50-100 ish a year to just 2 this year.
i have just ordered a macbook pro after being a windoze user if 20 years si if i need to i will swap systems. An ff Pentax will require me selling all my da glass any how.

I'm just thinking of how the 21mm ltd was such a nice everyday/street lens, and how the 50mm on 35mm feels to me to do the same job. Ultimately the 21 Ltd had to go, it was just too 'unremarkable', now if they came out with a 21 Ltd 1.8 I'd be on the waiting list and it would certainly stop me think about Fuji's.... I could go out everyday with just that and a 77mm and be a very happy bunny indeed.
In fact I love DOF, but the 35mm DOF vs price jump just doesn't seal the deal. I really want Medium Format DOF, and as I definitely can't afford that, nor would I want the bulk, I just learned the tricks and use what I have to achieve it:

If for some reason you wanted to replicate that look on a Pentax DSLR, you'd need a 24/1.4 or something like that. It would have to be an amazing lens to be as good as the 35/2.4 is wide open though.
Granted this wide-angle, shallow dof look is a bit of a niche requirement.
A perfect example, and niche is right, it's not often such effects are required, so again FF why? Sure if I were a full-on professional portrait photographer I'd go to 35mm just to make life a little easier.johnriley wrote:
That seems odd, why of all things a 20-24mm f/1.8?
Well this was shot at 35/2.4 on my Z70 (using the DA35):That seems odd, why of all things a 20-24mm f/1.8?

Sean, the image above is very, very nice. That FA77 1.8 may make me change my mind about buying another Pentax lens.

Cheers Gareth, it actually stopped me moving to a D600 back in May lol
I was at that crossroads myself but had too much work on to go through a system change, so got the 77 instead.
I have cleared out all my DA glass now though apart from the Siggy UWA's and the emergency DAL 55-300 (god knows how much it would cost to replace that gem in 35mm), it's up to Pentax now
D610 is interesting news.

I should imagine the K Ropnutoj will be in roughly the same price ball park as the Nikon D610, a bit lower but probably not unaffordably so and will be roughly the same pixel count. So a performance comparison will be very interesting. Lens prices are being elevated to the price where Pentax APSC and other marque full frame is not so great a leap. So it had better be good.

APS-C or FF? Can't make up your mind Pentax...then how about APS-H? Split the difference. Slightly smaller cameras than with FF if that is an issue but a whole new
ratio to play with, with regard to heritage lenses and an almost unique proposition at the moment certainly for non pro users.

Is there a site where I can have a laugh at the moans of
ex Pentax users who jumped ship to the Nikon D600 during it's
short 12 month life only to find that it has problems and has
to be replaced with the D610
Also where can I buy an old D600 with the £100 burning a hole
in my pocket
Sorry another question?... Will the Pentax FF if it ever comes
out also have a life of 12 months?

Well it looks like the k-5 mkii will only have a 12 monthish life if an ff isn't forthcoming soon.
despite the problems with the d600 it still remains a very competant and cheap camera. The k-5 had its own share of sensor stain issues at launch.

Not so bad that they had to discontinue it
I would be so mad I'd buy a Sony if I'd bought a D600

I don't think they would have released a K-5II at all had the Ricoh takeover hot happened and caused an inevitable delay in product development. The K-3 would already have happened. After all the K-5II is just a K-5 with the AF as it should have been in the first place

For an APS-C camera the K5ll and K5lls are in my opinion still at the peak in terms of IQ and DR. for 80% of what and how I shoot I am more than happy, I am just getting work now that requires higher ISO quality, more control of DOF would also help, but it is the higher ISO and clean images I am after. If the Pentax could shoot clean at ISO 2500, I would not be thinking about full frame. When Nikon do release the D610 they will make sure they get everything right in order to quash the bad press they have had with the D600, who knows they may even improve certain features. The one thing no one can deny is that the images from the D600 were very good and fully capable of clean images at ISO 2500. I do have every confidence in Pentax releasing a FF model, the question is when? For those who want or require FF how long are they willing to wait or should they wait?

Hi everyone, I have read the articles posted but cannot see the point really of ff. unless as Fletcher has said it is your living and need an upgrade to compete. Problems abound for amatuer photographers looking to (upgrade) primarily the cost of upgrading most of their lenses and then as many have said not seeing much improvement. I basically take snaps some turn out ok most not, I think most should use their k7, k5,ii,iis to the max imum potential. Really ff, for an amateur is just bragging rights most of the time. My thought's only, regards,Ian
