Pentax FF DSLR - confirmed

I want faster AF and I'm not boring.

I think it's going to worry a lot of FF whiners at the other forum. Now they are going to have to actually buy one!!!

It'll take me a fair while to stump the cash... But I'll make it happen... Question will be:

'Will I be able to keep the K5 as well?'

There was no suggestion from me that anybody was boring for wanting new/ improved/ innovative products and or developments - my point was quite specifically that the meaningless "why haven't Pentax given me FF - I am jumping ship" threads had become somewhat tedious of late. For the record - like Smeggy - I would love better AF but I am not going to start a thread threatening to jump ship if I don't get it - should it arrive I will probably start a thread praising it - guess I am just a glass half full sort of guy.

I wonder who will actually buy a FF Pentax DSLR. I doubt if many professionals will unless Pentax can organise a full professional backup service with fast servicing, lens hire etc.

That leaves the enthusiastic amateurs. With recent advances in sensor technology the improvement in image quality is going to be fairly small although there are undeniable advantages if using narrow depth of focus is important. FF lenses tend to be bigger and heavier as well as more expensive.

Recent trends point to a desire for smaller lighter cameras, hence the increasing popularity of small system mirror-less cameras. I think Pentax might struggle to achieve the sales volumes necessary to keep unit costs down sufficiently to compete with the big boys at Canikon.

I suspect it will spec out very similar to the new nikon d600 but with weather sealing and possibly a software/hardware hybrid IS system... for a similar price.

So do I, it will have to compete against the D600. Or against the D600's replacement by the time it comes out.

I will be buying one and my new k-5 mkiis will be my second body with my current k-5 as backup.

Nikon service has recently been shocking by all accounts with turnarounds longer than two weeks. I think once Pentax launch full frame they will have to improve their pro service..

I would buy one too (subject to funds). I would need a wide zoom for landscape but apart from that all my favourite lenses are full frame, so would serve a dual purpose with the K5 crop factor.

I'm waiting until it's under £100 and they release a magic firmware upgrade that makes all my lenses FF.

(Since 'any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic', obviously this just requires a sufficient advance in technology to come about.)

Before they release own FF Nikon and Canon wil have another model on the market, Pentax shouldn't compete with D600, rather with next one Nikon will release , but if you read this interview, this guy do realize they have to have something different/special
Also FF without good set of FF lenses, not going to be a big success.

Good news for those wanting the FF though, looks like the price of Ltd's may be going up

I realise this was tongue-in-cheek but I would hope Pentax have a similar mechanism to the other marques that automatically senses when a cropped-lens is added and changes the file size.

But it may actually increase the price of older lenses. After all many may realise that they can use old manual lenses to their full potential again!

Well it would be logical given Pentax's commitment to backward compatibility.
