I'm sure you'll be OK as long as you get a receipt - under UK law anyway. Any product sold commercially must be "fit for purpose" which overrides any manufacturer (non-)warranty.
The price for the 50-200 is undoubtably a good one though. Even I'm tempted and I don't really want one!

A lack of manufacturer warranty doesn't affect your consumer rights with the dealer - but it can be good to have in addition in case the dealer turns out to be uncooperative or goes bust.
Not sure that's worth paying over fifty quid for though! And this is a nice little lens even if you don't need one

If you buy from a UK dealer such as Jessops you will have a receipt and that's all you need for your guarantee. It isn't essential to register the product or return the card.
At £49.99 the lens is worth having need it or not. It's a good lens. You might even sell it for more on eBay...

If sending an item back to Pentax (UK) for warranty repair, they just require dated proof of purchase. That may be a stamped warranty card but as they say on their repairs page ( Pentax UK repairs page) a dated sales receipt is OK

Sorry, above I meant I'm not sure whether it's worth paying another fifty quid for a warranty, ie. I don't think it's worth paying £100+ just to get a lens with the warranty. I agree the Jessops offer is a bargain.

UK Law supercedes a statement like that. In fact, the supplier is liable anyway, so, for example, if you buy from Jessops you would look to Jessops to correct any fault.It says on the warranty card that the warranty is not valid unless the card is stamped by the dealer.
Many guarantee cards are also a marketing exercise - I generally don't fill them in and have never had a problem getting warranty service when required.

A manufacturer warranty is nothing to do with the law. It's a service IN ADDITION to your guarantee with the supplier and your consumer rights.
Yes the supplier is liable, but you may not want the hassle of suing them if they do not cooperate with your wishes, and you would not be able to sue them if they had gone bust by then. Then you would be grateful to have an additional option - of dealing direct with the manufacturer.

Pentax are reasonable folk
If you have the original receipt there's no problemo
(They confirmed this when I phoned and asked whether a warranty would be covered on second hand equipment... if the original receipt, or copy of, was provided then Pentax would honour the 1 year warranty. At least that's what they said to me )

I have ordered one yeasterday from jessops. It is £ 48.93 now but a £ 10 discount available from jessops which brings it down to 38.93 which is not bad looking at some samples at pentax gallery recently.

That's a bargain price! Paid over £100 for mine (though a while back).
It's a lovely compact lens with excellent bokeh:
"Bug's Eye View" & Snowdrops were both taken with it on the K10D.
Might have to take it for another run...

I ordered the 40 quid lens the other day. Just had an email from Jessops saying they have none in stock but I can have a TAMRON 70-300 F4/5.6 DI PAF F4-5.6 MACRO instead for the same price. I decided to stick with the Pentax despite the wait. Right decision?

Right decision because the Pentax is good for travelling light even if you do/will own a longer and faster telephoto as well.
The Tamron is widely available at low prices, whereas Jessop's offer for the Pentax is exceptional.
