Pentax 110 Winder II - Not working?

I bought a Pentax Auto 110 Super kit quite cheaply via Gumtree and I don't think the winder II is working but do not know how to check it in a camera without film. The winder itself is in OK-ish condition but by no means mint.

I have put fresh AA batteries in but I don't get that springy feel from when the batteries are in contact with the internal springs/contact. The external door does fit snugly.

1. Is there any way to check it off-camera or in a camera without film?
2. Is there a manual/exploded diagram showing how to disassemble the winder to check the electrical connections and mechanics?

I dont think you can check it without film but I'm not 100% certain,I'll look tomorrow when I get home.

Take great care with batteries, modern AAs and in particular Duracells are slighty longer than they used to be and it is critical with the 110 winder. I know to my cost having broken the battery door on a mint winder by using Duracells. The door was never the best designed or made thing in the first place and it may be that the plastic has become brittle over the years too.
