Passing Storm

Taken yesterday late afternoon near Catcott, Somerset Levels. Flooded lowlands. This breaks lots of "rules": horizon half way up frame; no real focal point; no natural frame... is there enough in the clouds, colour and reflection to make a decent landscape? Your comments, as ever, much appreciated.

I like it. The slope of the clouds draws the eyes to the single cloud with the reflection. Exposure is such that detail is lost on the horizon which leaves the focus on the cloud and reflection. As for the rules,we should call them guide lines. Photography would be boring if we all followed the rules. LOL.

nice. I would have said maybe a wider lens, but I quite like that as it is.

"inner peace" on a print.

Thanks Steven,

Glad you like it: I do need feedback on this one!

You're right about the under exposed horizon: I sacrificed shadow detail knowing I had to keep cloud highlights from blowing-out. (Perils of digital, I'm afraid.)

Thanks, Bret,

That's a really interesting observation. The lens was a 28mm Clubman (a favourite of mine) and, as you may guess, I cropped a bit of plain blue sky to even-up the composition. There was, of course, lots more landscape either side! Maybe I should have used the 18-55 instead.

"Inner peace"...sounds like one of those framed prints they sell in Ikea!

Best wishes,

Andrew

P.S. Hope the weather is warming up a bit for you on the Gulf of Bothnia.
Best wishes,

Andrew

try a nd grad filter and a tripod (nd6 will give you 2 stops)

Andrew,

Even without the ND filter, there is some detail in the shadows that is accessible, by pushing the shadows a little and then recovering the cloud highlights. It should work even better for you with the original of course.

Even with just this lens, you could do a panorama by stitching images together. I would stick with this lens in preference to the 18-55 - IMO...

A lovely job, i-berg. The picture takes on a quite different feel with your processing, more soft and limpid.

James, I've often thought of using a graduated filter and with a dead straight horizon like this one it would work very well.

Thankyou for your interest and imput, gents.

Regards,

A.

That's a terrific mod. Nice shot, but it did need that little lift! PS I just spotted that quote in your sig Andrew, what a good quote!

Thanks Will,

He did a nice job post processing, didn't he?

Glad you like the quotation. Adams is not the greatest of photographers but I firmly believe that photography is different from painting because it captures a unique moment which at its best, should make you think and question and maybe even provide answers to those questions. If you see what I mean!

(What a load of waffle!)
