P-TTL not working with K20D

Yesterday I got my K20D but the first tests with the flash(es) AF360FGZ and AF540FGZ were disappointing. When attached to the camera I cannot bring them in P-TTL mode. It seems the camera doesn't "see" the flash as the flash indicator is blinking and exposure time is long (in Av).

I tested the flashes again on the *istD and they work as intended (i.e. recognized by the camera and zooming when using the zoom on the lens).

Am I doing something wrong or is there a fault in my brand new K20D? Or is there some incompatibility of older flashes? (The 540 is two years old now, the 360 a fair bit older).

I appreciate replies but might not be back to check until the end of the week (a short trip to the UK, London and Southampton).

Cheers,
Prieni

Hi Prieni,

I'm afraid to say that I just tested my AF360FGZ on my K20D and have no problems at all with it going into P-TTL or with exposure or the camera recognising that the flash is attached.

Have you check the Fn menu on the K20D and do you have it in the normal Flash On mode?

My AF360FGZ is only around 6 months old, if that.

Thanks chirpy for your reply.

Yes, I have set the Fn menu to flash on. Whatever mode I adjust on the flash, the camera won't take notice of it ("flashing" flash symbol).
If I set it on manual mode the flash will fire but the result will be an overexposed shot.

Seems as if I have to send this little marvel of technology back.

Hopefully more luck with the next one (or the fixed one)...

Cheers,
Prieni

Well, I had to send it back and hope that it will be exchanged for a new one. Can you imagine how I feel having had a brand new K20D for what felt like 20 nanoseconds (I had it a week but no time to put it through it's paces; seemed to work wonderful as long as you don't stuck a Pentax flash gun on it).

Fingers crossed that I will get another one soon...

I'd be pretty upset too. Hopefully you'll get a quick turnaround on it.
