Other Brands

This is a Pentax "watering hole". yes, an intelligent debate would command that both sides of the argument are considered- but not,imo, when it comes to camera brands please!!
Personally I don't want to talk about other kit unless it is made by Pentax or it will work with Pentax kit.The reason I am here is because I don't like the look or feel of other kit inc IQ. ( Mainstream kit )
Pentax is the Maverick brand.Keep it Pentax. if somebody changes do we need to know why?Not in opinion! We all see things different.Pentax is a quality niche brand and not a household name like other brands-but who cares.So lets be purist and stick to Pentax (period-as the americans would say)

The thing is, "about Pentax" can't really be dissociated from "about Pentax compared with other brands".

It makes no sense at all to me, to be an isolated community from which visitors can get nothing more balanced than "we love Pentax". I think it enriches the forum considerably having people who can write informatively about other brands and their pros and cons.

We could have a separate forum, like PentaxForums.com now has, that includes a special area to discuss other brands in their relationship to Pentax. Then if you weren't interested, it would be easy to avoid.

But my vote would be to avoid getting any more parochial - I don't think we need a separate area myself.

I don't see any benefit in being 'maverick' for its own sake, either.

I don't think they are a niche brand. They just have low market share. Of course there are lenses only available in Pentax mount, but that can be said for all manufacturers.

Yes this is a Pentax forum & It should not be opened to all brands images. But not discussing the competition is unhealthy I think. Besides I don't think it is a common occurence, sure there've been a few long threads over the past week, but they have in fact had very little to do with other brands in the end.

IMO,comparing Pentax to other marques seems futile on this forum, perhaps we should just let the journalists take care of that for us.Do they get it right?:

I cannot understand what is going on here, I bought into Pentax last January; it was the system that best matched my criteria. It was not the "best" camera, or "best" range of lenses around, it suited my needs the best.
I am happy with my choice, if another person decides that Canon or Nikon or whatever suits them best I cannot see a problem with that. Does my photography suffer because someone else chooses a different system : No.
Is it this forums mission to convert all camera users to Pentax :
I don`t think so.
I feel that images posted, and questions or opinions raised should relate to Pentax, within the Pentax areas. Cannot for the life of me see what is wrong in discussing other brands in the general areas, in a civil manner.

I like Pentax but I know it isn't perfect. Tilt/shift lens anyone? But I am happy.

On the project this year we were using 1 x Nikon, 3 x Canon and 5 x Pentax cameras... I didn't bring the Horseman, and that really is a niche camera!

I think what I was trying to say earlier, but not very well, was that somehow for me to talk about Canon And Nikon doesn't seem to help me to become a better photographer, I have friends with both, and we don't compare as such, when I had a Nikon I used to compare it to other Nikon's.I prefer Pentax IQ, I wouldn't say anything to them though.
I have learnt a huge amount from this forum.

You have to remember that Samsung bodies and lenses are Pentax Items in a different coat.

As such the users and members who have these have the same queries as Pentax users.

They are welcome, why shouldn't they be?

Some of us collect older cameras, Kris has his (impressive) Horseman and a hernia from carrying it about. I have a couple of Zenits, built like tanks in the old T34 factories from left over tanks! We don't just use Pentax!

As a Pentax forum it does focus on our favourite brand, but there has to be leeway to discuss other brands, either good or bad IMO.

That's a fair comment.
With my original post I didn't really put my brain in gear!! I take on board all comments.

I was happy with Pentax in 1975 and I'm still happy now, I had plenty of choices in 1975 as I have now but I still love my Pentax.
