If the camera was new then it should have been replaced, not repaired.
Under the consumer rights act if an item isn't fit for use or fails in a reasonable time period then it should be replaced.
Unfortunately once you accept a repair you're stuck with it, a ploy used in the past to shift dodgy stock.
I suggest contacting Pentax direct and explaining the problem, and try to convince them to exchange the camera.
In the past I've always had good results from talking calmly to the customer service depts. of various companies.

In this case I would guess that Pentax was unaware of the circumstances. They were just sent a camera to repair. Try talking to them direct, as hardgravity suggests, they are usually quite reasonable folk.
Best wishes, Kris.

It is an illusion that photos are made with the camera… they are made with the eye, heart and head. Henri Cartier-Bresson
Lots of film bodies, a couple of digital ones, too many lenses (mainly older glass) and a Horseman LE 5x4.

My dealings with Pentax service are very good as well, when my *ist 35mm died they gave me a brand new *ist digital body in exchange, as it was at the time of the "change over" to digital and the spares for the 35mm camera were not available at the time.In this case I would guess that Pentax was unaware of the circumstances. So I only have praise for them.

I bought my Optio A40 on 10.03.2009...I used it twice and 2 months later, walking around a public garden taking photographs, the screen went...It looked like something had burned out at its centre with radiating marks..behind all this...if I really looked..were very faint crack lines...I DIDN'T DROP IT...BANG IT OR IMPACT IT IN ANY WAY!..I took it back to the store and was told it was impact damage (despite what I've just said) and it would have to be sent back to Pentax...That was 18th May...I received a telephone call today to say that if I want to have it repaired it will cost me £95!!...Oh!..and whether or not I choose to have it repaired..it will cost me £6.90 to have it returned!!...I chose this camera because I liked the look of it..I liked the size of the screen..and for a novice like me it was perfect..great pictures...great video footage..sound could be better but hey!..I'm no professional...I didn't expect 2 months usage for the money I spent....I've done some research on the net this afternoon and it appears that other people have had and are having the same sort of problems with this model...Which makes me very very angry...Angry that an attempt is being made to charge me for what seems to be a fault within the camera...My last digi camera lasted me for 7 years...It was not a Pentax camera...I could contact Pentax and try to get it repaired free of charge as others have done...However...having bought it off my credit card I can claim the money back from them...who will claim it from the store I bought it from...who no doubt will have to try to claim it back from Pentax...I won't be buying another Pentax camera....

Your camera is still clearly under warranty, so the supplier (the shop) has the responsibility of sorting it out. If there hasn't been impact damage then I don't see how the shop can judge that there has been, so you need to get tough with them. I also don't see why you should pay anything.
If needs be you could presumably pursue them through the small claims court, but hopefully they would see sense long before then.
Hope that helps!
