While we're on the subject of gargantuan lenses, in that PF thread there is a link to a Carl Zeiss 1700mm f/4. You have to check this thing out, it weighs 256kg and looks like something out of Star Wars.

I wonder what the reaction would be if you were doing some photography in front of a Federal building in the US with that bad boy?!

If you add a 1.7x T/C, multiply by the 1.5x crop factor, it comes out to a whopping 3060mm. That's not a lens, it's a telescope.
