Old sigma 100-300

Does anyone have any experience with this lens? Is it good? How old is it? Will it work fine with my K100D? (Lots of questions I know..)
Found it used, condition stated "Almost as new" - £59
Any help would be useful, even suggestions of similar focal length, better lenses?

I wouldn't touch it if I were you, and I'd be wary of any consumer telephoto that's slower than F5.6 at 300mm.

I paid something like £67 on Ebay for a 2nd hand Sigma 70-300 APO Macro and that is a much, much better lens than the one listed.

What a horrid piece of glass... I also have the 70-300 APO macro which is the lowest quality telezoom you should stick on a camera, it does the job.

Unfortunately mine is damaged (though not optically harmed) and not for sale....

If you have about 700 pounds, and can find one, an EX 100-300 f4 is a fabulous lens....

Its just im taking a trip with my parents to Ras Al-Khaimah, one of the emirates in UAE about an hour or two outside Dubai. I want a reasonably long lens but on a budget, since ive just bought my fisheye. I was looking at the 50-200mm, is this tamrom 70-300mm a better option? Or would I be better off with a lower range, upto around 100 or 150?
The longest lens I have currently is my kit lens, 18-55. Hah.
Id mostly be shooting people, and places, so a very long lens isnt necessary.

Unless you're looking for a small lens then the Sigma 70-300 APO Macro is a better option than the Pentax 50-200 and they're about the same price (the Sigma is faster, sharper and has useful macro capabilities). The Sigma is also frequently available used.

I've never used the Tamron 70-300 but I've seen some posts from folks saying it's a good lens.

Expensive but getting fair reviews at the moment, and nice and fast at f2.8.

I believe the Tamron 70-300mm LD Di is a better lens generally than the Pentax 50-200mm (and has a larger max aperture at 200mm: F4.5 v 5.6), but the 50-200 is still pretty good, and much smaller and lighter - so more convenient for travelling - and good value for money especially if you get the Samsung D-Xenon version (which is virtually the same lens as the Pentax branded one).

I don't think there would be any advantage for you in having a telephoto zoom with a shorter range, unless getting a much more expensive one.

However, you might enjoy a fast prime lens or two in addition to a general purpose tele zoom, eg: 50, 100 or 135mm. These are great for photographing people at a distance. Second-hand old manual-focus lenses can be bought quite cheaply; manual-exposure ones even more cheaply. These all work with the latest digital cameras (though more button-pushing may be required).

Warning: Lens buying is addictive!

Yeah, I already know that hahah. There is one advantage to being 16 with no job - no income to spend on lenses!

Are the samsung ones actually no different apart from the badge?
Oh and also, how can I tell the difference between an autoexposure lens and a manual exposure lens?

In that case you may like to also consider the Sigma 55-200. I got a brand new one on that auction site for £65.00 recently from a dealer.

I really think so - apart from the badge, colour and pattern on the grip. No one has come up wih any evidence that there's more difference than that. I got one myself (as well as the Tamron).

Curry's have them at £29.87 !!!!!!!! "subject to availability".

Mostly by the model name. Most auto-exposure Pentax lenses are prefixed with "A", "F", "FA" or "DA". Also look out for the actual "A" setting on the aperture ring that many Pentax auto-exposure lenses had. (Note that F, FA and DA are auto-focus as well as auto-exposure).

A popular fully manual range used the "M" prefix - although aparently the "M" doesn't stand for "manual". There was also a manual range known just as "K" by the fans, though the lenses aren't actually marked "K".
