Oh David, very intriguing shot. The one spot of red catches the eye.

Lovely lines, you know what it is. I'd like to see one with the brightness up a touch to compare and see a little more detail. Perhaps also one mono losing the red light. Perhaps also the top left is a slight void, any chance of a shift right?
But I'm nit picking.
Love it.

David,
It works for me as an abstract, and to that end, the blackness and lack of detail in large parts of the image are integral. The blown reflections from the rails and the red light are the keys to it.
I've had a look at your EXIF - a quick shutterspeed and some -ve EV have most likely given you a chance to keep all of that light on the rails, while substantially under-exposing the rest?
The red light on the end of the train does draw the eye, but in doing so adds a touch of pop-art to the image.
For me, it succeeds - I like it.

Stephen, Doug: I added the red light as a focal point but I'm not convinced myself whether it works better without it. I have the all-mono version as well.
i-Berg: I deliberately under exposed to get this effect. It was dull light but not night time. The effect I wanted was the pattern of bright rails against the blackness with only a hint of train.

David, as I thought then - and it has worked effectively too.

Dave, this in an interesting image. The red light is at odds and doesn't work for me, but the simple shape of that lightlamp is enough to draw the eye.
The handle rod of the lamp has analogy with the rail lines, too. I wonder if its worth just limiting that small patch of white area near the train wheels to enforce this more? Also, is there anymore of the image to see, at the top?

Pauly, I knew you wouldn't like the colour popping bit.. I'm not convinced myself that it works. The top of the picture bleeds out into featureless sky and I really wanted to concentrate on the pattern of the rails so I chopped off the top of the train.

Dave, you could include the sky at the top but darken it in keeping with the rest of the image, no?

Intriguing shot David! At first I wasn't thrilled with it, but I keep going back to look at it! It is a shame about the tight crop at the top, and I agree the red dot doesn't seem necessary (a black dot would do just as well?), but it definitely has something that grabs you.

For me the photograph is the bottom 2/3 which contains the snaking lines and up to but not including the number. Can't see the point of all the clutter at the top he says tactfully

I tried this picture out on some colleagues at Durham PS as well. The one whose opinion I respect over most made a similar suggestion about how it should be cropped to MikeW. And yes for me its the one that works best. So here it is.

PS I couldn't afford to print this - it would use up all my black ink.

Send it away to proamimaging link who are very reasonable. Lilly uses them and I have too and will again although their maximum size is quite small at 20x16.
It is a very nice shot.
