If you go the Elements route - just check out the price of a Wacom Tablet - you may get the Tablet plus Elements for a price very close to the Elements by itself?
I don't believe elements is included with the new tablets

It is included. I just bought an Intuos 4 tablet a couple moths back and the software is one of the software options available by download and license.SteveA wrote:

It may be. The software downloads were not listed with the Intuos 4 on any of the advertising materials I had from the manufacturer, but when the box arrived it was a registration bonus. You also have the option of ordering a CD with the programs, but of course that is at extra cost.

Hi Katie
Both Picasa and GIMP are free to download. And as a fairly recent member to this sight, (even more recent regular contributor and dare I say fan), that Picasa is a very good start, simple and effective. Have used GIMP, also not bad.
As JR says though Elements is very good, especially for the price.
Have fun, the guys in here are always very helpful.

Wow, this has been so helpful - thanks everyone for contributing to my initial question. I feel much better informed on editing software now. I'm a bit of a purist, but would still like to get into editing just to see what it's capable of creatively. Thanks again.
Regards
Katie

Katie,
As Kris suggests: give Gimp a try. You've nothing to lose and you can get into image editing for nothing TODAY! You'll learn a lot then, when you're ready, you can get something like Elements which gets better with every version they bring out.
Shoot some good pics, edit them and then stick them on this site for us to have a look at! K-7 mmm, can't beat that!
Best wishes,
Andrew

Third vote for GIMP. It continues to get better with every release. You may find that you don't need Photoshop let alone Photoshop Elements.
The Online Documentation is pretty good too, certainly extensive and easy to move through.
And there is a RAW plug-in too, handles PEF and DNG, although I haven't got to trying either yet.
I have an older version of Photoshop, pre-CS/activation versions, but rarely use it now, GIMP actually seems easier now for many things, and it's certainly faster.

GIMP. UFRaw rocks and the batch processing is very nice indeed.
I can give you some presets, too, (curves) and a .cmd for UFRaw-batch if you so desire.

Since you can download and try out Lightroom for free, you should probably give this a shot ... and then see if you can get a student license
There are several free tools too, and many are very capable as well, just that the integrated environment that a 'paid for' tool offers will need to be handled by the user ...
Check this link for a list of some of the free stuff available ...
