New Pentaxian here! How Far Do You Push Your K5/K7 Weather Seals?

Posted 09/04/2011 - 18:46 Link
New Pentax user here! Just ordered a K-5 kit, after selling off my 5D Mark II. I'm tired of those giant "L" zooms which aren't even as good as everybody raves... Looking forward to a more compact system, that's more affordable all round!

I ordered a K-5 and the 18-55mm WR kit. I haven't decided to bank the 16-50mm 2.8 yet, but I do want a primarily weather sealed camera so I can pretty much use it in the rain without worrying at all. I've seen the internet videos of dumping water on it, putting it in the shower etc.. I'm just wondering how careful should I be?

Should I try not to shoot in the rain, but not worry too much if I get caught? Or should I just shoot away rain or shine, assuming I'm using a weather sealed lens? I'm talking Costa Rica in the rainy season here (which is where I'm going this fall).

Also how reliable is the sealing on the 18-55? Any less than the pro lenses? An 18-55 sounds so "meh" to me, but I also ordered the 70mm 2.4 so hopefully it's a nice combo while I save for either the 31mm or the 16-50mm.

Have used the K-7 and DA* zooms in pouring rain, no issues just keep the hoods on and lens pointed down slightly to stop rain hitting the front element. The biggest problem is getting over the nerves of doing it!

PS welcome to the forum

PPS let us know how you think the K-5 compares to your previous kit once you get to know it a bit better!

There's a video (on You Tube?) of some guy taking photos of surfers on the east coast of the US. He is happy to get his K? (I forget which one) and DA*50-135 thoroughly doused in seawater - it literally pours all over him. At the end of the shoot he rinses it off in fresh water and dries it off. From the way he talks he's been doing this regularly with this equipment.

I'm not sure I'd push it that far (particularly with a 50-135:shock - but it's reassuring to know there are people who happily do.

I have to admit that's one of the reasons I'm really lusting after a 50-135. Complete sealing so I can go out in the rain to the zoo when it's empty.... and not worry about snow with the camera suctioncupped to the car.

The 18-55 is drizzle-safe. I don't even bother to take pictures when it's pouring (I'm more worried about myself getting sick than the camera) so can't test.

Your combo sounds nice. I found the 16-50 too heavy though. None of my current lens has working weight (body + lens) above 1.3kg and even so 800 pics in 2 hours can wear your fingers down pretty quickly.

I've used the 18-55mm in pouring rain on several occasions. No problem.

I have used non WR lenses on the K20D in pouring rain and both lens and camera survived just fine.
I haven't used the K-5 in the rain yet but it has been in snow and down to -24C with no problems, even getting a layer of frozen snow on it while dog sledding. I chipped the ice off and it was fine. that too was with a non WR lens.

You'll be fine in the pouring rain all day long - just make sure you get under cover when you change battery / card / lens.

Danny's advice is certainly worth heeding too:

Water running on the front element is a royal pain...

Cool! I'm taking this thing into the elements then!

Now I just need to decide whether the 16-50 is worth it, since I already have a weather sealed zoom. I think I'd probably benefit more investing in primes. That 31mm 1.8 looks lovely.

K10D and the DA*50-135 thrive in sea spray and soaking rain. I'm sure the K5 will be no less resilient.

G'day and welcome.

Sealed lenses do vary.

Those that do not extend and therefore don't move air in and out if the lens are the most resilient.

These are:

50-135
55
200
300

I'd use these in all weather.

Those that extend I am more careful with as they can suck air and moisture in.

Those are:

16-50
100
60-250

I have no experience with the WR kit lenses though.

With any sealed instrument it's more important what you do with it when finished..... Don't put it in the case damp..... Dry it off with a cloth or tissue...... leave it out of the case for a few hours to dry completely preferably in a room with normal humidity and temperature.

What kind of rain do you have in London that makes you sick?
