New Microsoft Codecs

Have had a look - seems interesting but not sure what to download and whether it will work. I have windows 7, 64 bit. Does anyone know which one I should download - if any!!
Currently using DNG but would like to go back to PEF.

Nope only DNG and not for the K5, Kr & 645D

The size of PEF files varies considerably according to which generation of body, IIRC.
Regarding the codec issue, if you are on Windows 7, Vista or XP SP3 I would strongly recommend spending about £9 and getting the FastPictureViewer codec pack, since it works for all the bodies, Pentax and Samsung, DNG and PEF, and does PSD files and lots of others too (370 cameras). No affiliation with them, but I was very impressed when I asked them to add Samsung PEF and they put it in the public version within the day...

With the newer camera there is no difference not sure about the K20D.
If you use your computer to convert raw (DNG/PEF) into DNG then it will use a higer compression and so the files are smaller that way.
Most RAW use TIFF as the base so there is little difference to begin with.

I also have Windows 7, 64 bit. The 64 bit version of the codec works fine. Yes, I know the filename has "amd64" in it, but it work fines for Intel processors too (mine is an i5).Have had a look - seems interesting but not sure what to download and whether it will work. I have windows 7, 64 bit. Does anyone know which one I should download - if any!!

It might be a combination of the two.

That's because AMD was the first one with a 64bit code and with a 64bit processor so Microsoft used their code for Windows, Intel was simply to late so Intel now has to use the AMD code as well.Yes, I know the filename has "amd64" in it, but it work fines for Intel processors too (mine is an i5).

K-5 DNGs are nowhere near as big as K20D DNGs are.
I always shot PEF with the K20D but use DNG now with the K-5.

No. On my K20D at least it's the other way round: PEFs are compressed (losslessly, like a ZIP or FLAC file) but DNGs are not. This may have changed subsequently because when the K20D was designed DNG was still very much in its infancy.Am I right in saying that PEF files are larger than DNG and take up loads of space??
As for the codecs, in true Microsoft fashion the website stalled when I tried to download them.
