hi all, i recently bought the pentax k-r with the 300mm twins lens kit and already im wanting a new lens.
i have become addicted to DOF in pics and my k-r is always on aperture priority.
can anyone recommend a good value lens with the widest aperture for taking close ups of flowers/insects that blur out backgrounds?
thanks all

This probably cries out for the Pentax 100mm f2.8 Macro lens. The focal length is excellent for flower close ups and the performance is outstanding.

hi john, as a beginner im just coming to terms with all this terminology.
would you recommmend the 100mm f2.8 over the 50mm 1.4 for close ups?
cheers

The 50mm f1.4 only focuses down to about 45cm, so isn't really a close up lens. The SMC Pentax D-FA 100mm f2.8 Macro lens focuses down to 1:1, so an object is reproduced life size.

There is a WR version of the 100mm as well, but that will be much more expensive.

There's an LBA group on this forum, oh wait a minute that IS the forum!!

Just give in and enjoy the hunt for the next lens.

By the way there's a Samsung version of the Pentax D-FA 100mm f2.8 Macro, you may find one a t a lower price than the Pentax, and as far as I can tell the image quality is just as good.

You've got good advice already but you'll find the Tamron Di 90 Macro is much cheaper and just as good (if you don't need the WR). Those two and the Sigma 105 are used by many many macro shooters and all come very highly recommended.

There's a very strict entrance criteria - you must show how many lenses you've bought in the last month (under two and you are refused admission)

I won't tell you how many I've bought.

But the Falcon 500 mirror in a charity shop, complete with filters, was a bargain!

Never thought of the Tammy 90 as an alternative, good idea frogfish.

For flowers the 18-55 at 55mm is already pretty good, try it
Put the lens on manual focus and put it to his closest focus and then move the camera about till you get focus.
