Need help with Custom WB

Everyone here was so helpful with my last problem I thought I would come here for help with this one. I have read the instructions on adjusting a custom white balance. In my 35+ years of photography the only thing I can fault Pentax in is there instructions for the K20D. I thought that you would be able to adjust it to white when you take the test of the white paper. My screen stays a Light tan color and does not change when I move the dot around in the grid. What am I doing wrong? Or should I say how do you do it correctly in laymans terms. This is my first digital camera and I am sure my problems are lack of knowledge.

You have to do this:

Fn > select white balance > scroll down to manual symbol > select >

Point camera at white paper and press the shutter release. The screen goes black for a couple of seconds then shows the picture of the paper, it might look orange or whatever, press OK and it should magically become white.

A bit long winded really.

You can then move the dot around to fine tune.

I followed your instructions exactly and still cant get it white. What I am comming up with looks like a grey card. It changes when fine tuneing but I cant get it white.

A white subject will look grey if not very highly exposed. Grey is fine to take a white balance reading from as long as it's truly grey rather than a colour. We could just as well call it grey balance.
