you can sharpen it in raw and that not a bad thing, but I would wait till the end of the post processing for the best results, I find that the image is a lot better when you sharpen it at the very end and in Jpeg just for printing or showing on a web site or internet
thank you for taking the time to look and comment
I am by no means an expert, but I believe the received wisdom is that you should sharpen differently for print vs screen consumption. This fits in with your recommendation to sharpen at the end, since then you can easily make several versions sharpened as you wish for the various ways you might use the image.you can sharpen it in raw and that not a bad thing, but I would wait till the end of the post processing for the best results, I find that the image is a lot better when you sharpen it at the very end and in Jpeg just for printing or showing on a web site or internet

As to what the differences are between required sharpening for print and screen I'm afraid that's beyond my meagre knowledge
you don't have to be mad to post here
but it does help

It makes sense to sharpen to some degree at RAW conversion stage - this is to correct for the effects of the AA filter (if fitted!), and also you're in 16bit so it may the best stab at it in terms of boosting definintion without casuing any degradation.
Also you can balance this 'Capture Sharpening' step in RAW with Noise Reduction in the RAW converter, which is also a good opportunity to get this right in high quality. If you don't apply sharpening in the RAW converter to balance the effects of any NR then you risk having to use less effective or more aggressive options at the Pixel editing stage.
I would add that the more complex converters will include options to limit the effects of sharpening to edges with a defined radius amount, which would benefit many types of images. This is an option you can use in RawTherapee for example.

Just a note on sharpening in Lightroom:
Because of the way lightroom works, i.e Every edut you do to the images is non destructive ( all develop parameters to the image are recalculated everytime you change something) , then it makes NO DIFFERENCE to the IQ at what stage you apply sharpening.
The great thing about Lightroom is that you can change the amount of any edit at any time ( including sharpening ).

Yup, just like any RAW converter - any parametreic edits are just data records of the inputs you make. It makes no difference what order you actually set the sliders. LR is no different in that respect really is it, at least as far as pure RAW conversion goes?

As pointed out on the other thread, you may have missed my last qualifying comment quoted above - 'LR is no different in that respect really is it, at least as far as pure RAW conversion goes?'
I have clearly made the distinction therefore between RAW format and raster editing processes. That is because I am aware that LR continues a non-destructive workflow after 'conversion' stage.

Thanks for putting it back on Shaun. Missed it first time round. I found your voice over very good, relaxing but not boring. Process similar to what I do. Just wondered that when I have my raw image in Elements there is an option to sharpen it then with the raw image at the same time as doing the other adjustments on the raw. Should I wait till the end and just sharpen the resultant jpg?
Dave
