I listen to music most of the day and always when I am on the PC. I am currently listening to one of may favourite albums, Trompe Le Monde by The Pixies.

Just had Thomas Dolby on in the car (driving back from dropping son off at Scout camp). Time now for a wee whisky and either Steely Dan or Richard Hawley on the PC whilst grazing the gallery. Haven't decided which yet

One thing at a time, concentrating on the photography is quite enough without being distracted by music.
My feeling is that photography is trying to create an emotional reaction from the viewer, an empathy. How can you do that against a background of different emotional involvement - the music? The music dictates a feeling - what happens if you want to create some other kind of feeling. I don't think it can be done.

I find that I can read and write quite happily with music (including music with lyrics) in the background (either through headphones to block the usual open-plan office noise, or at home in the kitchen). However I really struggle to hold a conversation with music in the background.
Must be something about the way my brain works. My wife's is wired the opposite way - she can't read or write if there is a song in the background, but she can happily hold a conversation.

I agree but it's quite simply solved, play the same kind of emotional music as the photos you want to make.My feeling is that photography is trying to create an emotional reaction from the viewer, an empathy. The one can aspire the other.
Most of the time i've music one of the composer Yoko Kanno, most of the time it isn't that word heavy and since she created a lot of music for tv series and movies she has a great list of different styles.

I dont know if the OP meant "while working on images" "on the PC" could mean doing any number of different thingsjohnriley wrote:

Me? I rarely play music while on the PC, or while doing anything else that requires concentration, I just play it while driving

Mostly I live in silence.
When I do put music on it ranges from Robert Johnson, Leadbelly and other old (and new) blues through soul music to rock - the Stones, Hendrix, REM, John Hiatt, Tom Petty, Gn'R, Aerosmith, RHCP and on to Bach, Beethoven and Tchaikovsky.
Whatever comes up on random play mostly, though I will sometimes sit and enjoy a concerto, or an entire CD by a single artist/group.
I like listening to my husband playing guitar when I am using the netbook downstairs in the room next to his music room. (Now in fact!)
In the car I like talk radio, as I do to wake up and go to sleep.
Silence is still my preferred state though.

I always have music blasting out when I'm editing pics - I find the music energizes my and and I can concentrate better on the pics. I never find that the vibe of the music distracts from the vibe of the image

IMHO - anybody who believes playing music whilst editing images is a distraction does not have 3 children running around the house creating havoc!
Do I play music? darned right I do - currently in a nostalgic mood so am listening to Supertramp's Album - Breakfast in America - well it seemed appropriate for this time of day - perhaps breakfast at tiffany;s next

No matter how many lenses I have owned - I have always needed just one more

We men are told we can’t multy task, so I obey the rules and just do one thing at a time.
Because if caught multy tasking by her that must be obeyed, the next thing will be expected to do the vacuum cleaning, while thinking what needs cooking for diner, or something similar. If you get my drift.
So be warned.
Take care.

Almost always when on the PC I am either
- listening to what's on TV e.g. later today I will listen to the build up to F1 GP qualifying listening out for anything I want to actually 'see, If that happens I go over rewind on the PVR and actually watch that bit. Will move to just watching the TV once qualy actually starts.
- listening to music, right now I am listening to PJ Harvey's Mercury prize winning albumn 'Let England Shake' on Spotify, to see what I make of it.
