More security hassling photographers

I somewhat agree with the looking for trouble sentiment.

I'd like to think that if any one of us explained we were amateur photographers enjoying a hobby, entering a competition etc. then that would help de-fuse things. Even showing the photos we'd taken could help, even though they may have no right to ask to see them. If after trying to get them on your side then someone like those security guards was still aggressive then we would need to fall back on our rights. If we explained ourselves just maybe some people would actually help us get the pictures we were after. I can live in hope.

I'm personally less concerned about dealing with idiot security guards than this general feeling these days that if you take photographs of children you must be a pervert. I must say it inhibits me slightly. There are some classic candid photographs from the 50's, 60's and 70's that may never have been taken if the attitudes of today existed then.

In my experience the usual respose by the "wasps" is an immediate attack, insisting that you stop, rather than the more gentile approach of asking why you are taking photographs.

It might be noted that the companies who make the most noise have no qualms about having cameras monitoring publc areas, including roads and footpaths well outside of their "territory"

Sadly my experiences are the same as Bernards and his use of "Attack" has been the case with my. the "wasps" are as I have found heavy handed and seem to know it all and you either stand your ground with civility or you run away as they want.....

Hope you dont ever encounter this it isnt pleasant and the larger your camera the more chance you have of being stopped

I think the guy was very polite and stated clearly it was his hobby. I wish the security had phoned the police.

I do like when companies start spouting company policies when as the guy in the video said company policies don't affect him as a member of the public...

so apart from his "15 minutes of fame" on sewer-tube why was he taking photographs of the building?

It says on the text under the video that he was making a 'Visit Scunthorpe' guide so he had good reason to be taking pictures of buildings in the town.

What a funny video, best I've seen in some time! If it were me taking that sort of attitude from a jobsworth I would have stood my ground in the same way as he did.

I would loved to have been a fly on the wall when the management of that factory saw this video, (assuming they have) more than likely a few red faces and a carpeting for the rather over zealous and grossly under trained security staff.

We learn nothing from this.

I don't think it advances the cause of photographers rights to go out somewhere and act as an agent-provocateur in this manner.

How many reading here would go out with a stick and have a good poke in a wasps nest?

I think we all know that there are poorly trained and motivated people working in the security sector and others have outlined the best way to deal with them above.

Yep, whether this guy was 'baiting' them slightly or not, they responded very unprofessionally... the woman in particular was straight off 'The Jeremy Kyle Show'.

FWIW I do think he hung around longer than he needed to, to wind them up, and it would have been a better idea to explain why he was taking pictures... I know there's no *obligation* to explain what you're doing when taking pictures, but why not? You never know, they might have let him have a better view if he had explained about his website etc...
