I was trying to get a nice 'bold' yellow colour, like a 'block' of colour so detail didn't factor in my mind when taking the shot.

Would I get more detail with a more expensive lense?

What are you actually using - what's your camera and what lens [ please note the spelling of lens ] were you using ?

I have only 3 lenses [ note plural ] one is the Kit lens that came with my K-x [ and it's a good lens ] one is my ' holiday' lens and the other is my new one - the 35 mm . My most expensive lens cost me £250 - that's not a lot of money .

Right Gareth, I'll tell you what I'm going to do. I'm going to try and take some more shots, have a real think about what I'm doing before I take them and read the K10 manual. Then I'll put them up here for you and others to critique.

Just came across this thread, I haven't had such a good laugh for ages! I think the poster's name is the funniest thing of all.

Being serious, I think a little humility and politenes might be called for if you want sensible critique of your pictures, which I have to say are a very long way from "expert". Posting a blown out picture of some daffodils with the comment that it shows how easy it is to get shallow DOF is not the way forward. At the moment you seem to just be annoying people, which is not the purpose of this forum.

It's extraordinary what PentaxExpert has managed to come up with using his 'PENTAX DXLR'.

Can't wait for your next set PE.

The Yahoo forum has them as well. I've blocked messages by somebody
calling himself pentaxexpert or some such. Everything about digital
he said was negative. I ripped him for it and somebody else said to
pay no attention. The guy is an old screwmount owner who doesn't
shoot digital, couldn't produce any personal photos when challenged,
and who got all his opinions from reading other internet sites. That
slowed him down and when he responded to one of the other posters, the
other guy told him to stop! And to quit sending him opinions
off-line! The poster with the question didn't want 2nd hand info from
somebody re-hashing other's opinions. I cheered.

Sheer brilliance! This is a very impressive p*** take. Respect, Mr. "PentaxExpert". We've all had a good laugh, now how about posting some serious images.

Garteth, olive branch acepted
Greg, thats not me - it must be another pentaxexpert

FYI I have decided to join Digital Answers Digital SLR Skills Bootcamp. Not only does it cater for beginers, but also more experienced photographers.
I am hoping to find a 'study buddy'.

I am also ordering one of those magic light manuals as I don't think Pentax have done a good job with the manual, it hasn't helped me so far.

Hopefully some better shots are on their way!

This is a shot that helps you to remember what it looked like. Typical for holiday snappers and the like, where the photograph is only a tool for jogging the memory when you think back at the time.
This one is a little bit more with the cigar placed in it.

For it to be a 'photographers' photograph more care should be taken on the background and, more crucial, lighting. The right side is too dark.

Still Life Composition Of Fruit
If this is the result of a long compositional effort then you should re-think. Look at some photography forums and find some still life shots you like. Analyse what you like in them. Try to figure out what the lighting might have been.

This here might be just ok on the composition and it is in focus. All other things are bad. The light reflexes in the bowl are awful, the colours look off and the bottom corners sink into black nothingness.

Daffodils
It is a shallow DOF image with flowers all right but far from being impressive. I do see some merit in the blown out daffodils, it's an idea one could work on. But here the composition is lacking, why do you have cut off the one on the right? It shouldn't be in the frame. The background also would be better if you had looked a bit more from top, i.e. having only the grass in the background.
Great demonstration that it is not that easy to take impressive flower shots.
Even if it doesn't thrill you it might be a good exercise for you to try and reproduce some of the better flower shots you stumble across.

Cat
Again, there is some merit in the idea to go high key with this cat shot. As it is it looks more like an accidentaly overexposed shot. It has been mentioned that the background here also is sub-ideal.

I think you made your life at PU forum a bit difficult with your entree. We are really a helpful bunch unless we feel that someone is pulling our legs.
If you are really serious about wanting to learn photography, you are at the right place, even if it doesn't feel like it.
