Moon shot (with a free lens!)

As I mentioned in another thread recently, I acquired a Tamron 500mm f8 mirror lens from ebay recently. I wasn't really looking for this lens, but it was a bit of a bargain! The lens was listed with original hood and caps, a Nikon mount, an Olympus mount, a Pentax PK mount, plus a 01F 2x teleconverter. In the blurry ebay photo one of the mounts had three bright spots on the rim, so I bid like a crazy man Won the auction for £105, and the lens arrived a couple of days ago in virtually mint condition, AND the Pentax adapter turned out to be a PKA adapter

I already have a PKA adapter, so I've already listed all of the new mounts and TC for sale on ebay. I'm hopeful that this lens will end up being free! In fact this lens doesn't really need a PKA adapter due to the fixed aperture, so I'm just using it with a cheap regular PK adapter.

Obviously this pales in comparison to Father Ted's telescope shots, but I wasn't too unhappy with the results.

It's great shooting the moon and you've got a superb image!!

I had a play last night and got a nice one. I can hark back to when I first shot the moon with my camera mounted on a tripod with my 500mm mirror lens and was using slow shutter speeds... then I had the epiphany moment when I realised I could hand hold the bugger!!!

The one I took last night was shot with 200iso and 1/800 shutter at f8!

Well, I've tried hand held with my Tamron 300mm and couldn't get near to that
Getting there! Thanks to you guys

Nice shot Niklas! I've tried the moon with my Tamron 70-300 and that's a good result for that lens (my best one was also around the 230mm mark).

Nice one by Spad too - what lens was that with?

Still drooling over Father Ted's shot though, that was great

That's really good Stefan, what did you do to that one? I've messed around with more sharpening since I saw this one of yours. Results are still not as good as yours

Stefan your shot inspired me to try again! The detail seems better but now I've got this white circle around the edge

Oops, replaced the Flickr image (brightened it a bit after looking at this shot) and broke the link above. Here it is again:

I've never tried a moon shot before - but you guys have spurred me on to have a go.

This was taken a few moments ago with a Pentax K200D and a 45 year old Tamron 400mm f7.5 (circa 1963) hand held. Well, sort of hand held - I did use a bean bag and leaned against the garden shed. It was taken at f8 1/400sec ISO 400 with SR switched on.

I'm quite pleased really.

Right. seeing as I had a telescope and you guys used hand held long focal lenses, it looks like I'm going to have to get my act together!
These images are great considering the size difference of lens. How heavily cropped are they from the original?
Getting there! Thanks to you guys
