Moon on a stick lens buying question

I know this question has no definite answer, but a compromise is acceptable and your advice much appreciated please

Would like to purchase one good quality zoom lens min of 16mm and max of 135mm.
Checked my photos and very few ever go out of this focal range

Due to upcoming financial burdens this will be the last chance for me to splurge any cash on such a luxury and really need to get it right

Do realise that there isn't a magic one does all lens, but would like my one big treat to be a good'un

For that range, the only option I know of is the 18-125mm from Sigma. They are out of production. If you can fond one, they might be somewhere between £150 and £250.
Tokina is rumored to come out with a lens on that range, dunno when.

Thanks, looking like I may have to compromise even more and consequently looking at the 17-70 as a viable option

16-135mm would be excellent if anyone made one.
I have a Tamron 24-135mm and find that a really good compromise but would love it to be wider.

I have the Pentax 17-70. It was my main lens on my recent US holiday. I am very happy with it. A bit longer would have been great but I managed most photos very well with the range. It is not weatherproof, though it is sealed at the bayonet. It does not focus as close as for instance the kit lens does but it is a great all round performer.

You don't say how much you want to spend, or what you already have. If you can afford it, and have a reasonable wide angle (which includes the kit lens btw!) then consider the 50-135*. You won't regret it.

Thanks Gwyn, the 50-135* was the other lens I have considered, but wondering how much I would miss the wider angle

Knew this was going to be asking too much, why can't they just make a 16-135 as Mike suggested and that would be all my problems dealt with

The 17-70 + 50-135 is a wonderfull combination.
What wider lens do you use now, if ti is the 16-45 then i would get the 50-135 instead of the 17-70. The 17-70 is an improvement over he 16-45 bu the extra reac the 50-135 brings in is more dear to me atleast then.

50mm is wide enough if people are your subject, the 50-135 is a wonderfull portrait lens. You will miss the landscape and architect shots with the lens, you can still do them though but it's harder.

If you really just want one lens or switch between subjects very often then the range of the 17-70 is more convenient. It's a real walk around lens.

How about either the Sima or Tamron 18-200, or Pentax 18-250/

Good one lens gats all solutions.

Stop talking about giving yourself a big treat in spite of financial burdens! I'm skint too and it's started me off justifying to myself buying a 15mm DA Ltd prime lens although god knows I can't afford it!
