We seem to have wandered way off the thread of when is Pentax going to produce a converter or extension tubes to work with their lenses.

Probably because only Pentax will be able to tell you.
Everyone else can only guess.

I believe they said that when the new lens road map came with out the 1.4x SDM TC that the items were placed to a later date to make way for other releases.
The K7 was one of them and the WR kit lenses and a super tele lens came on the chart and lenses for the 645D.
It seems like they first want to get the 645D out now since the K7 is released now and that we find after that soon the TC back but I think it might take another year though if you know Pentax by now

Extension tubes was never on the road map and I think you'll need a long time for that one to come out.
Also you use extension tube for close focusing so no need to put SDM contacts in that you only need the contacts for the aperture and there are extension tubes on the market that work perfectly with that.

A 1.4x converter multiplies the focal length of any lens by 1.4x and there is a light loss of 1 stop.

A 2x converter multiplies 2x and there is a light loss of 2 stops

A 3x converter etc. with 3x and 3 stops loss.

This will apply to all lenses and if it's not happening then I would look at the communication between camera and lens and coverter. Are the contacts clean?

I would never use a 3x converter - every one I have ever tried has been dreadful.
Not true John the 1.4x and 2x apply only to the design Focal Length and increase with Focal Length..... may even decrease on a WA lens.

How can trying to explain why they aren't producing the said converter be described as wandering off thread?

Would you prefer me to say 27th November 2010?

Wherever did you get that idea?

It is true that converters are designed with a purpose in mind, which is why Pentax made -S and -L versions for shorter and longer focal lengths.

It's also true that cheap converters are usually worse than just blowing up the image more.

The thread was about Pentax's intentions, not about what effect various converters have on various lenses. I am with John Riley - as I understand it, a 1.4x converter does just that, i.e. multiplies the focal length by 1.4 and that applies with any focal length of lens. However, I do understand that they are not particularly good with anything other than medium to long telephoto lenses and certainly work poorly with WA lenses.

Possibly, but not necessarily. If I had to raise a grumble about Pentax, it would be that their lens range stops at 300mm.

Hi Roger,

What is the problem with the body cap?

Regards,

Peter.

That's not the body cap. It's a transit cap to protect the camera innards until you put a lens on it. The Pentax K body cap is a bayonet fit and can still be purchased as an optional accessory.

Maybe few people use them after getting the camera, so it was deemed a waste to supply one unless we really wanted one.

I wasn't able to find a proper body cap new. In the end, the cap from 1.4x TC I bought is now in service and the TC has the Pringles lid.

I notice that SRS do now have K mount body caps, but they are also selling the white ones as body caps.

Just my own opinion, but having bought Pentax'es flagship body as it was at the time, somehow the expression "Hap'orth of tar" came to mind.

Hi Roger,

I have owned 4 Pentax cameras, and the " Body Cap" is as John says a transit cap!

It keeps the crap out of new cameras until the new purchaser, buys the camera and fits a lens onto it.

I hope I'm not missing something here, but it is only a kind of plug after all, and to the best of my knowledge, they are all the same either in black or white plastic, and fit the Pentax range!
Regards,
Peter.
