Tiny sensor AND really ugly- well done Pentax! However the prosect of a k-mount mirrorless is definitely good news.

I wonder how much Samsung helped in the development of this model - a bit late to the game but a bit more competition is always beneficial for buyers.

Having moved from a Prosumer (KM A200) to the K10D & now K20D I can certainly see the appeal of the technology, I think it needs a little longer to develop though until it fully rivals DSLRs though, when it does I may well be tempted though

After a while with Panny GH1 and the K-5 I'm pretty sure I'm not interested in the mirrorless K unless VF lag is close to zero and there is a hybrid sort of AF. CDAF is just not fast enough.

A small camera with a compact-size sensor. Why, pray tell, would a consumer interested in such a device not just buy a compact? Doing a mirrorless camera would be a decent idea in itself, but this? I think it's a couple of days early.

I don't think it looks too bad (it could even grow on me) but I'll reserve judgement until I see an official feature list. If it turns out to be about the same size / price as a Panasonic LX3/5 but with ability to use C mount lenses then I could be interested...

that argument did not stop Pentax from making the auto 110, nor minox, for that matter...

I hope Pentax just yanks the mirror box out of the kx, or even better, throws a half silvered mirror into a kx and leaves the mirror able to flip up for low light video, and shoot through the mirror in bright light... add h264 codec and boom, evils done.... or spend a couple bucks and gut the pentaprism and add an evf...
that would give you the best of d-slr's and micro 4/3rds with no development costs...
I've been playing with the kr for days now and to be honest I won't be shopping for another slr for a while now...
one can argue that the kx is old for entry d-slr standards, but look up dxo mark's ratings on the kx vs samsung nx, sony nex, and panasonic 4/3's and you'll see the kx can kick EVIL Butt!

Would like to see a mirror less Pentax with the K Mount, I've been considering a Sony NEX but would prefer to be able to use lenses across both my SLR and Compact so I would be more than up for buying one of those, especially if the rumours are correct about it using a Sony Sensor as the NEX series are said to have the best image quality of the current compact systems.

I too looked at the nex system. I have three sony camcorders and to be honest, the way sony works thier batteries, lens mounts and accessories, you might as well be running seperate systems for each camera...

to add in a nex vg10 and nex 5 to my current crop would mean multiple propriety batteries+ chargers and lens a adaptor and flash adaptor.... that really sucks to be honest.

I bought a kr and "aa" battery adapters for it and am happy to know the proprietary battery is my back up, but the kr shoots with the same "AA"'s as my ds2 and flash units, fits all my lenses and HAS BETTER photo and video quality than any of the current mirror-less models.. the only drawback of course is the time limits on the video... I still need my sony camcorders for long recordings... and pro audio recording of course...

you could do much worse than a kx or kr if you want a small camera, with good low light and video abilities..... I couldn't afford to keep waiting for the "Next" model... too many good deals on kx's and kr's right now.

mirrorless with a k mount adapter makes the most sense, otherwise the bulk savings would be minimal and you might as well stick to an slr design.

What savings? have you actually compared the nex system or nx system to the kx/kr? (i just did)
The lenses are so big all you wind up with is the same sized lenses on awkward to hold bodies that in fact are not all that much smaller... I'd say in practical terms a kx with pancake lens is a better option if you want smaller or a compact camera...
I compared several models of samsung, sony and panasonic, and must say if I were starting from scratch, the Panasonic system has better af with video and system compatibility, and would be a great step up from a compact camera... but none will match the stills ability of the kx or kr.
With the Samsung or Sony, you could pack a bag with a body, a spare body and several lenses including a couple primes and a couple zooms, from each brand and when you're finished they are all comparable in weight and size, close enough that I bet if you took the spare body out of the pentax bag, it just might equal the others... the weight of a spare body is about the difference by the time you assemble a complete kit..
Oly and Pany are smaller but still inferior image quality...

A step up from a compact shooter, but hardly worth the image quality trade off for somebody that already shoots with a d-slr..... now if Pentax releases a mirror-less, I might consider it a worthwhile spare body..... if it is k-mount, "AA" powered and is priced less than a kr.....

OMG, cheers for this, mate. So it seems if something happened to my K-5, I can get a K-x as back up.
