Meter on MG - Intermittent over-exposure warning...

Every now and then the meter on my MG tells me I'm massively overexposing, stopping down the aperture has no effect on it...

Put the cap back on, leave it for a few mins and everything returns to normal working order...

Is this a battery warning or do I possibly have some kind of other intermittent fault?

I should add that this is currently my most used camera... Not altogether sure how long the battery should last... (?)

The contacts on the ISO dial can cause intermittent connection, so if you work the dial a bit to try and clean them, that could help.

Annoyed me today though and missed a few shots because of it... Really wanted to take the MX out but I've left it at my mums...

If this continues I reckon it's gonna be left on the shelf to look pretty...

As John says, it is most likely a problem with the contacts around the ISO dial, a known weak point with older M series cameras.

If you have had it serviced recently it should come with a warranty (probably six months) and it is probably worth returning to get sorted.

Intermittent faults such as this are hard/impossible to detect and it may be simply that it was working fine when it was serviced.

I can drop in to see the guy this week... He's local to me and a cool guy, so can't see a problem



Just so I know... What kind of warning does one get regarding the battery?
Does it just go dead?

I've replaced all my 35mm SLR's batteries as the cameras have arrived, so as yet not had one actually run out...

There's a manual here link which states the LEDs will start to flicker before the batteries die. It gives battery life from 'a few months' to a year.

I've only replaced a hand full of batteries over the years, I think most of mine have discharged on their own rather than being consumed by the camera electronics.

As John says, they should last quite a while (in the region of 50-60 films I believe). Some models, mainly the MX I think, do develop a battery drain problem which is a simple fix.

The MX problem is a leaf switch that sticks IIRC.

Similar problems on the other M series tend to be dirty contacts as John suggests, or dying/dead meter circuits.

Have you tried fresh batteries, they drain if the selector switch is left on.I turn mine to the 'B' position as this stops them draining.
