Hi Cedric
You will need to let us know what equipment you have so that we can advise the best option. Normally you would connect your hard drive to a computer and insert your media card into the slot on your computer. You can then copy directly to your hard drive.

Dave, i am looking for a self powered portable drive that i can take out with me to save the contents of sd cards to then download to a pc at home. My laptop (Acer aspire 5736) does not like uploading big files from my K10D. It often shuts down without warning if I try loading up 2 or 3 gbytes in one go.

Born again biker with lots of Pentax bits. Every day I wake up is a good day. I'm so old I don't even buy green bananas.

We too have a Vosonic from about 2005. We take it with us, and my husband uses it for his back up. I use it when I don't take the netbook.
Try Googling Image tank and see what others come up. All Vosonics have been discontinued it seems. Overtaken by netbooks and clouds. Nexto still make one I believe.

Hi Cedric
I think there is something wrong with your laptop if it is shutting down when copying files - it should not do this. I'm not sure how you can copy from a SD card to just a hard drive - you need a computer of some sort, or a media tablet (Apple ipad or any make of Andorid powered tablet).
Better still, get someone to sort out your laptop - it really is the easiest way to copy your files. Are you anywhere near to Sheffield? I would be happy to help you.

PS. My friend has a one from about 2006. name JOBO. The device that is not my friend.
Mine has a rechargable lithium battery and also a small leather pack which takes 4 AA's as a backup.
Maybe if they are not made anymore as Gwyn says then maybe you can find one on ebay. they all take mutiple cards for down loading and are all of a reasonabley pocketable size and have different capacities. (30, 50, 80, 120, Gb.) etc.
Hi. Gwyn. Mine is a X's Drive Super (VP6210) What's yours?
I got mine to take to Kenya on safari in Sept. 2005.
CHEERS Vic.

You used to get this kind of device from Mapiln electronics. About 6-8 years ago, it had a 2.5in LCD on it, USB & some media card reader sockets. Not seen one in a long time.

Morning everyone, thank you for your help with this. I just seems now like they are products from a far off time. Eiher they are not listed on websites or are out of stock and we don`t know if they will become available.
As for the laptop, well I found this model was very fickle with temperature problems. It just does not like handling 4 gbyte of files from my K5. I use it sat on a cooling fan. I suppose the ideal thing would be to load the files from cards to the PC but that`s two floors up but probably the answer. Would have been nice to store all the pix from say a week away on one portable device as a backup to the cards.
Many thanks though.

Don't overlook netbooks. Reasonably priced with the advantage of a screen to review shots with if you want to.
I use a netbook and a photobank. Photobank great for simple backup in the field; netbook great for making sure you've got what you wanted before leaving where ever you are and it's too late to return
