Manchester Mornings

Usually a Tuesday, but Manchester in the morning is where you might find me from time to time. Earlier this week I was playing with the MX-1, so here's some examples, and I'm very happy for anyone to critique or comment as they will.

Some great shots there, John! In the first image though, I thought it was a little too "warm-looking", but the white pillar (top-left) looks fairly evenly balanced, light-wise, so I guess the camera has pretty-much captured the image accurately. Same with the last image - the "neon-pink" looks (at first glance) a bit "false", but the light hitting the ceiling on the RHS seems to balance it out.

Agree above about the pillar.

Number two stands out above the rest for me

Thanks for the comments. The light did actually look like that, so the AWB selected really did a pretty good job. For comparison, this is what the Ricoh GR made of the Royal Exchange ceiling:

Quite a difference there, but in fact it's not a good comparison after all as these are different parts of the building and there's some natural light in the GR shot.

Are they different parts of the building? Looks like they're two pictures of the same light fitting, albeit from different angles.

They go all the way round and it depends where the light from two huge glass ceiling domes falls. Hard to tell for sure, but which do you prefer, the warmer shot or the cooler shot?

The MX-1 Royal Exchange image seems to have taken the pink/magenta tones beyond natural to me. The GR shot looks more as I would expect the colour balance to look, but perhaps it is underexposed - increasing the exposure in ACR by a stop, while preserving the black and the highlights, seems to improve the GR image for me, giving it a warmer look without the extreme pink of the MX-1 shot.

Edit: Forgot to add, I like the images, especially the first two.

Both of the Royal Exchange shots have their own merits, John. The warm shot has a gentle warmth to it, and the cooler shot looks natural in its own way too. Based purely on comparison between these 2 images, I think I'd opt for buying the Ricoh GR.

Agreed. I had considered an MX-1 but went for the GR.

I love the cooler shot. Not just the WB, but the upward angle with the pillar towering above you on the right hand side. Not to mention I think the wider angle of the lens helps, the warmer shot didn't show enough of the surroundings in (for me).

It has reminded me that I'd like to go back to the Royal Exchange again soon!

Both the MX-1 and the GR have their different merits. The former is more versatile, the latter better image quality. I quite like having both.

I like the look and feel of all the images you posted, the MX-1 looks a cracking little tool.
