LR 4 (Not Responding)

I have been trialing LR 4 and am wondering if my computer isn't up to the job as it often freezes with the message Not Responding. Specs are:

Intel E8000 Core Duo 3.0ghz
8gb ram
Win 7 Pro 64bit

I have no problems running CS6 or LR 3

Anyone else had/having similar problems (LR4 trial runs out in 5 days)
Regards
Stan

Don't know about your particular specs Stan, but I have an ageing desktop computer which ran Lightroom 3 fine, but froze repeatedly with Lightroom 4. I've ended up buying a new i5 laptop

I've had no such problems. I've been using LR4 since it became available on a 3 year old Intel Core2 Quad CPU Q8300 @ 2.5GHz, 8Gb RAM, Win 7 x64 Pro.

I was having general performance issues with my machine up to about 3 months ago when I reloaded it from scratch. Those problems have now gone away and everything works like new again. Now I make system images periodically to avoid that necessity in the future.

Perhaps it's time for a reload of your PC, or at least run something like CCleaner on it to tidy up a bit, do a defrag etc.

Thanks for the responses.

Alan, I'd like a new desktop computer but that is on the 'wants list' at the moment because of expenditure on lenses etc

Peter, I run CCleaner regularly but there is a lot of junk programs that I should get around to clearing out and I agree a format and re-install of the programs I actually use would be the way to go. There are couple of items that I'd have to look into before doing that though. For the moment I've removed LR 4. I may just buy another hard drive, install the os etc onto that then see what I need to reinstall software wise.

Hi Stan, about the CCleaner came to my mind the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. It's a small and very useful SW to remove many adwares/malwares/worms. Maybe it can help you.

I do a complete rebuild (or ghost restore) every six months or so. It's the nature of PCs that they get slower with age (But don't we all)!

I'm planning on whinging and moaning for six months till I get a new computer, or hit with something sharp and heavy (most likely outcome )

I don't recall changing that but as it's uninstalled now it doesn't matter. I will have a look at the cache size in LR3.6 though.

It was 1.0gb have increased it to 2gb. (or should it be decreased ) I would have thought with hard drives being so cheap now the default cache size in LR4 would have had an 'adequate' default size ?

Not at all SS.

If you open Lightroom and go to 'Preferences' > 'File Handling' tab, it should be down the bottom of that screen.

Hope that helps SS.

(this is on my Mac, hope PC same, if you are on PC)

You're very welcome SS.

I think, but I may be wrong, it is just the OP that can tag a post as helpful. Thank you anyway.

That means I can't tag this one as helpful either. Never mind.
