I was out yesterday and took a few long exposures using live view with a 10 stop ND filter. Disappointed when I got home to find 2 of them had streaks and purple/red casts. here is the worse image

Did some experimenting today and guess what caused it ?

Not covering up the viewfinder !!!

Yes, light gets in through the back and plays havoc. There's a little rubber cover piece I think, attached to the camera strap I think? But I've found a hand held over the viewfinder casting shade works ok. I thought it would only be an issue with fairly direct back lighting though.

Yep, been there, suffered that. It's a horrible feeling and another plus of the EVF

Convert to 'mono' and you'll be right

It was a lovely day down here, T- shirt weather. The sun was behind and slightly to the right.

I, too have been there and done that! Fortunately I realised what the problem was straight away and was able to re-take the image with a covered viewfinder!

Actually there's a pretty good chance this exact scene will be in the new Star Wars movies...

Nah -- you'd never fit an X wing under that bridge!

I learned my lesson regarding the viewfinder when I stopped looking through it for every shot and began using the LCD screen for changing settings (when taking multiple macros, for example). Even if it is shaded it will make a difference and I now put my left thumb over it while using the remote in my right hand. (The official cover for it is in my bag somewhere!)

My solution is my black hat. Set up the shot, put hat over back of camera with remote or 2 second timer fire camera. I used the same method over the lens between shots when taking the eclipse to keep the bright sun off the sensor.
EASY. CHEERS Vic.

Blu-tack.

Has the added advantage of pulling off hair'n'dust when you remove it.
(Wasn't my idea, Mike Browne on YouTube mentioned it's what he uses)

Is it not the case that the viewfinder is blacked out during live view operation? Does that not mean that no light can enter through the viewfinder then?
