London Shots - K10D vs 120

A few weeks back I posted some of my first K10D shots from a trip into London - finally got round to posting the film efforts last week and got them back from processing today.

What's interesting is that I can show you some comparision shots of the K10D vs 120 - decide for yourself if it's a fair fight between 10MP APS-C sensor and a 617 strip of Velvia...

How did you convert the film one into jpeg? (film scanner or it was a scan from a print)

If I had to make a choice it would be in favour of the Velvia, for two reasons
A) the top of the towers seem to be burned out with the K10, but then again the sun/cloud had obviously moved for the second shot - in fact the burn-out seems to have moved down the towers so it is still there
B) I prefer the colurs in the Velvia shot, but then again these could be altered on PS

Conclusion? Next time around it could be the K10 that comes out on top. Comparisons can often misleading. A couple of years back I tried to compare three bridge cameras using over 20 sets of near identical images. Four of us did a blind review and all chose the same camera. Side by side it seemed marginally the best, so I bought that camera. But later when I put the images up individually and it was one of the others that came out on top, so I swapped! Now I try to avoid comparisons.

A healthy dose of magenta does a fair approximation of the Velvia shot.

For my own purposes I scan them twice - once at 2400dpi as a TIFF using an Epson 4990 flatbed with special 120 film holder and anti-newton glass to hold it flat. And then I scanned it again for web use at 1200dpi as a jpeg - for some reason I'm having trouble converting from large 200+MB TIFF files to jpeg in CS2.

It's not exactly the fairest of comparisons - the 617 was naturally set up on a tripod and had the full on spot meter and ND grad treatment to hold those highlights and the sky back a little. The K10D was a grab shot handheld as I was setting up and then it was pretty much my first real play with converting DNG RAW in CS2... Under more controlled conditions the playing field would be much more level.

I prefer the 617 shot too, especially when you see the original or the massive 200+MB scan I made. Plus there's been no playing around in photoshop at all...

I do need to go out with just the K10D and put it through it's paces properly without me getting distracted with my first love of playing around with the MF kit...
