Hi.Yes live view is a big help. Best when using a tripod maybe but live view lets you zoom in so you can tweak the focus and get it spot on.

On the K-r tripod mounted manual focus is easier, have not tried handheld, never been able (sussed out how) to zoom in the live view though.

Live View is a real boon for manual focussing. To zoom in you simply press the 'Info' button; each time you press it the image zooms in and you can then use the direction buttons to move to different parts of the image.

I bought a KPS 1.35x magnifier from Algi recently. It definitely does help with manual focusing but it's not a panacea - I still found my eyes streaming as I struggled to focus my 135/2.5 at f2.5. I feel the screen just does not quite show how narrow the DOF really is. However once I fitted the magnifier, I was convinced I wouldn't want to take it off again!
There's a big following for Canon EE-S type focussing screens over on the US forum - worth a google. But not sure if you can replace the standard screen in a Kr?
Liveview is an option, but Pentax DSLRs are a bit klunky in terms of how you access the zoomed-in view - you have to keep pressing the 'info' button and unfortunately the image gets progressively blockier the further you zoom in.
On a Sony NEX you press one button which zooms to a 7x magnified view, and it's a decently clear view. You also have the benefit of focus peaking.

You would be better with LV magnified to focus manually.
The size of the viewfinder is important and I would imagine
it to be quite small on a K-r. A magnifier would help, but
it would still be small, better to trade in for a bigger
viewfinder such as the K-30 or K-5.... see this review
about how important a large viewfinder is..... link

I don't like using the live view, can't get on with it at all.
When my k-r was working I had a Pentax O-ME53 magnifying eye cup fitted permanently to it, but I do a lot of macro work and mainly use manual focus for everything.
I think it protruded out a bit further from the camera than the normal eye cup so might be helpful if you wear glasses.

Thanks all.
I think my problem stems from an unwillingness to cart a tripod about, although I have two and a monopod...
Must try harder!

I use a K-r and my varifocals really do hinder manual focus.
Is live view an option or would a focus magnifier help?
Many thanks.
