K100D Super- Battery problems

Hello all

I have read many threads on other sites about my problem but am not satisfied with the answers given.

Bought 4 years ago and owned from new.

Stored, without batteries, in a case with silca packs for 7 months.

Got out to use it, have used Nimh (2700) and Lithium, no joy, The battery warning light flashed and the camera almost instantly shuts down.

Please advise!!!

Many thanks.

Mac

Is this the one you're selling? If so, puzzled, as the shots in your 'for sale' ad showed it alive and well.

Anyway, notwithstanding how it was kept, it's still possible for a little corrosion to have built up on the battery contacts, so give them a good clean.

Did you check the state of charge of the batteries you tried it with? The battery light, etc, would suggest low battery state.

My brother in law had issues with an *ist-DL that required a new motherboard... so he replaced it with a K-x that also showed 'odd' battery issues.

On my recommendation he switched to Eneloop batteries and hasn't had an issue since

FYI, Eneloops will stay charged for approx 12 months, whereas regular NiMH cells will self discharge within a week or two (so the lower capacity of Eneloop NiMH is actually better than a higher capacity NiMH that self discharges).

But JohnX's suggestion of checking battery contacts is a good one.

NOTE: The cameras that use AA cells try to work out what type of battery is installed (Lithium, NiMH, Alkaline) based on the voltage. For example, it can be that overcharged NiMH look like flat Alkalines etc. Not sure if there's a custom setting to tell the camera which battery type you use... will have to check the manual.

Sounds like the batteries although usable aren't good enough to
indicate a high enough voltage to the camera. Try some new
Eneloops or even lithiums.

Edit: Read ALL the stuff about batteries on this site.

Hello

It is indeed the same camera and has been working fine.

There are many site suggestions for eneloops so this may be the way forward.

Many thanks.

Now I am puzzled. You say at the start of this thread that the camera just shuts down, and then say it's working fine, although you don't seem to have found a battery solution.

Is there still a problem or not?
Best regards, John

Slightly off-topic... I'd never heard of ENELOOPS before, until now. I had a look on Amazon for the batteries and charger, and was struck dumb (if that's possible!! ) by the price variance!! One site listed 4 Sanyo AA's plus charger at around £42, but I've just placed an order for precisely the same item for £12.69!!!

A question of timing.

The camera has been working fine. Until one week ago when a change of batteries precipitated this post. The camera seems to only work with one set of batteries, 2700 NiMh. I have used identical replacements and these have failed. So, yes, there is still a problem.

Many thanks.

It's all explained on Ricehigh's site.
He is an electrical engineer and has done everything
possible to investigate this known fault.

What you describe is quite normal for the Pentax
cameras that use AA's. After the batteries are
rejected by the camera they can be used in other
equipment without any problems and without a
recharge.

I have a k100d super and have had exactly the same problem recently. My newest set of regular NiMH were about 15 months old and have been great up to now but recently started to run down quickly. I've brought a set Eneloops and everything is great again - the batteries were already charged and they are very reasonable from such as Amazon.

As I said, NiMH often overcharge and will look like flat Alkalines.
Interestingly, the K-x added a battery choice menu item - it defaults to Auto, but allows you to choose a specific type.

Try Eneloops first though

Has anyone compared the normal (white) Eneloops with the high power (black) version? I have both and it seems to me that the standard white ones last longer and produce more shots per charge than the black ones do! Has anyone else found this, if so I would be interested to know why this may be the case, as I would have thought the reverse should apply.

In any case, Eneloops are extremely good and I've never had any issues with my K-x powered by these batteries, in contrast with normal NiMh ones which are useless.

With regard to Eneloops, I have used both the white and black versions on my KR, and have found that the black ones not only last longer but are more efficient when using live view or video. These are the modes that eat up batteries, but probably the extra power of the black eneloops helps here.

Referring to the original thread,I am sure that the use of eneloops will cure your problem with your 100D camera, as it did when I had my DL2.

Thanks all.

I am still curious as to why a new set of lithiums AAs failed. Are they incompatible with the K100D?

I guess eneloop in a storm will do.....

You've only just mentioned that the Lithiums were new
Unless they are faulty I'm surprised they don't work.

Sometimes the positive cap of AA's doesn't make good contact
with the equipment or the whole battery is on the small
side of the specification.

Hopefully the Eneloops will work, because it is a known
problem.
