Lens does not properly fit in Pentax K-01

Hi, I just got a second hand Miranda 28mm f2.8 PKA on ebay; and when trying it out I found that it does not fit in my Pentax K-01... It only does a fraction of the normal turn.

The camera is OK, as I've used other Pentax and non Pentax lenses without any issues.

Is it a faulty lens or maybe there is a trick to fit it properly?

Fitting a lens to any Pentax camera should be smooth and totally free of problems. If this one doesn't fit, then I would suggest it should not be used.

Are you sure it is PKA and not some similar but not compatible bayonet?

Well, the lens says PK-A on the aperture ring and was advertised as such...

I once got a Tokina 60-300mm f4-5.6 that had a similar problem, but it was because the flange was too big, so I unscrewed and removed and it worked fine (the A position worked correctly, although I needed to set it to f4 before being able to remove it).

How deep does the plastic ridge protude into the camera. It may be catching. you could probably shave it down to fit

I had this very issue with mine, they have a Ricoh pin which allows them to be mounted on Ricoh cameras but this pin catches on the autofocus connection on DSLRs.

It is very simple to remove, I will send you a PM with the link to how to remove it.

Looking at the photo I think the aperture ring shows PK-A/R which implies the Ricoh mount, dealt with as Andrew describes. It sounds like you may have had a lucky escape, I've heard many stories of the Ricoh pin locking a lens onto the camera!

Just in case anybody does get the Ricoh pin stuck on their DSLR - I have had this happen twice and despite many horror stories online of people wrecking their lens mounts trying to force it off.

It is relatively simple to remove and requires no force. To do this - I pressed the lens release button to create as much slack as possible between lens and camera mount. I then located the offending pin by sliding a very thin feeler gauge between lens and mount - if I remember correctly - it is at around 10 o'clock with the lens facing you.

Once located - just gently waggle the edge of the feeler gauge under the tip of the pin and with a little patience - you will find that just a slight movement of the pin will allow you to turn the lens and it will retract - it is a 5 minute job.

Carl. I think it might be a good idea to explain what a feeler gauge is for those that are not mechanically minded. Also which one you used.
0.0015" (0.0375mm) or larger? poss. a .004" (0.1mm) or 0.008" (0.2mm) would be stiff enough?. I think in either imperial OR metric but some these days think only in metric. I've removed Ricoh pins from 2 lenses that I own. JUST IN CASE!

Good point! Also agree it is a good idea to remove the pin "in case" - 2nd one I got stuck - I hadn't actually noticed it was an a/r or wouldn't have attached it in truth.

OK - feeler gauge - a slim piece of metal used for measuring gaps - generally in engineering - normally come in sets of varying thicknesses. In the 'good old days" most motorists who maintained their own vehicles would have owned a set for setting the gaps on spark plugs etc.

Which one did I use - I have to say that I can not remember - I have both imperial and metric sets. It needs to be thin enough to go in the gap and stiff enough to move the pin (some are so thin that they are very soft and too flexible)

For those without access to a set of gauges - the other method is to use a razor blade -easier if you can buy a packet of the old style wet blades - but also doable by removing the blade from a safety razor - just slide the blade in same as you would the feeler gauge - razor blades are both thin enough and rigid enough for the job.

So Vic - if you have a set of gauges - a micrometer and a razor blade - you should be able to work out which gauge = a razor blade in metric and imperial - sounds like a rainy day job to me
