Lens codings

Hi Guys,
I'm having another senior moment so apologies if the answers should be obvious.
I have a Sigma 70-300DG but as you know this is macro 200-300mm only

So I've been looking at lenses (circa 70-110mm max) and havn't yet descided on a macro or a zoom. Or are there any which do both over the whole range

I like the idea of a macro so (for exaple) I can get shots of insects easier, but a zoom would give me a bit wider scope (maybe).

Anyway to the actual query
What do all the codes mean that follow the sizes eg
Pentax - DA; DFA; WR
Sigma - DG; EX; DC; OS
Tamron - SP; DI; DI-II; LD
Not an exhaustive list but I'm sure you've come across these and more.

Is there a listing anywhere that will explain these?
Are they (for the sake of argument) irrelevant and that any will suit a K10D and work beyond my capabilities?

regards
Bernard

For the Pentax have a look here.

The only other one I am sure of is that the Sigma OS is Optical Stabilised other then that I am not sure but others may be able to help.
Kind regards

It's nice to be nice!

Pentax K-5 with D-GB4 Grip, to many lenses to mention by now (serious LBA by now), TC's, Lowepro Slingshot 300 AW, Manfrotto 028 & Redsnapper RS-283 with various Heads plus various Camera Clamps (I collect them). Pentax AF 360FGZ, Pentax AF 240FT, several Metz 45 CT-1 & 5 with stands and 'Blow Up' Soft Boxes, Flash Triggers, and various Macro gear.

The K10D has the newest K-mount so everything will work if you've firmware 1.30 or newer.

As for macro, there is a big differnce in a semi macro zoom like the 70-300 or a real macro lens. The 70-300 is a budget zoom while a macro is a lens specially engineerd just for macro.
