That's his reasoning Peter. I have to admit that personally, I am not convinced by the advantage of FF - at least, not for the photography I do.

Doubtless someone more technically minded than me will be along in a moment but as I understand it it's not just the number of pixels it's they are arranged and their density that delivers quality. By having larger sensors (or whatever they) to catch the light which the FF will give you'll get better quality and less interference between them.
That said I can't understand what's so important about a sensor that's 24x36mm which is what I understand FF to be. I'd rather have one that worked as well as it possibly can within physical constraints. Not that I'm suggesting the D700 isn't better quality, at that money if really ought to be!

It's entirely possible that the change will be a disappointment. Certainly looking at the A3 competition entries at ADAPS, on a print there is no obvious advantage to those who use full frame.
The real difference that shows is in technique and skill, which far outweighs any difference in camera. The same is true of the RAW/JPEG debate, as many of our best photographers shoot in JPEG.
I wouldn't try to dissuade anyone from trying, but would just suggest that it's wise to try before you buy. A very good friend of mine is very unahappy with his D300 and it's not clear why he bought it, as previously he wasn't happy with his D200....
On the other hand, his wife is very happy with her D80, so cost is not the factor either.

Why would anybody want to move from a 14.6Mp APS-C sensor to a 12.?Mp FF sensor?
This FF sensor gets you less noise a) because there are fewer pixels and b) because they are larger. FF retains more detail in the images than APS-C by a significant margin, just as MF trumps FF. That seems important to the OP.

Strange the way people decide to change to a new system without trying what's available in the current system.
Grass is always greener, I suppose. And, of course, if you're not happy with your pictures, it's invariably the camera's fault!
Ansel Adams, Cartier-Bresson, and countless others. However did they manage without a modern camera? Luck, I suppose.
There ARE sometimes good reasons to change brands, but I'm not convinced any apply here.

I think Bob's been quite clear why he wants FF - why it's important to him, and I can certainly understand why from his perspective. I'm pretty convinced he has a good reason at any rate. It would'nt be a good reason for me however - but this is'nt about me....

RR will have to PM you about compareing the D700 against the Pentax K20D, if he put's a topic on here (like I did with the Canon 50D) it will be removed by John Riley As this is after all a Pentax Forum!!!!
Did it not occur to you that a forum entitled "Pentax User" might possibly be intended for users of Pentax equipment?[quote:3496ace15f="Pwynnej"]

I know you posted photos in the your photos section and that those got deleted and I know that isn't allowed.RR will have to PM you about compareing the D700 against the Pentax K20D, if he put's a topic on here (like I did with the Canon 50D) it will be removed by John Riley As this is after all a Pentax Forum!!!!
An ex pentaxian (forgot his name :blush went to the Nikon D300 and he posted a topic on that, a sort of comparison and that wasn't deleted.

I do think he had a valid argument for wanting FF based on what he wants out of a system; I dont need FF and am happy with the K20D, but just because I am, it does'nt mean others should too. It's a subjective thang, and we should respect Bob's choice rather than unload our values/opinions and disagree with him, which is effectively what some of us are doing.
Let's just wish him the best of luck, and if we can't understand why he wants to get a D700, well that's our problem not his.

I respect Bob's right to have, and express, a view. I don't have to respect the view itself.
For several reasons, I think he is making the wrong choice, and this has nothing to do with Pentax. In particular, I think he thinks that by switching brands he will get better results, and I suspect he will be disappointed.
His pictures are generally over-sharpened (from what I have seen). I think that he needs to improve his technique and make the best use of his current equipment before he thinks of changing to something else.
Basically, it's who's behind the camera, not the name on it, that counts.
