heard a rumor...anybody know about this?
Possible the kr replacement was ready for production, when Ricoh took over but has been delayed?

Well it's probably correct in as much as soon as any model is introduced to the buying public its sucsessor is already on the drawing board.

It sounds plausible, although presumably Ricoh knew what was happening when they took over. Given that Pentax only have 2 current' DSLRs unlike Canikon and Sony excluding 645D) any delay in replacing these models might send out the wrong signals to the market. At the very least they should bring out a Kr 'Super'/ '+' ...to send out the right vibes. This would be relatively cheap to do and Pentax have some experience with this approach already. I wouldn't leave it too long though before deciding.

What people are really hoping for is a commitment to FF and a 3 model range.

Without that minimum commitment Pentax (as in digital cameras) will be no more. It will have gone under by next summer. I wouldn't have bought a Kx last christmas if I knew then that there would be no more new models and that the company was being wound down. Hopefully the inaction is to ensure their next model is absolutely spot on, but there is definitely a strong groundswell of opinion on all the Pentax forums that something bold and decisive is needed...like FF. If you go FF then you need a 3 model range.

This rumour appeared on DPR yesterday.

I ordered a K5 from a local independent dealer (UK) last thursday. I have known Ivan for several years now and trust him. He had been informed by Pentax Europe that production of the Kr had been stopped due to critical components not being manufactured in Thailand due to the flooding there (the camera is made elsewhere but depends on the components). There was therefore a backlog of orders for them.

Additionally the DA55-300mm is in short supply with a backorder of some 300 for the UK. (Might be europe for that amount?). This was confirmed by two Pentax Pro dealers who were both awaiting delivery of stock, one of whom had ordered 10 and received 3. Even SRS were out of them last Thursday, althougn ironically moments after I placed the order with another pro dealer, some actually arrived there, but too late for me, sadly (Cheers Doug for the email!).

By the way, as you've now sussed out I've got a K5 on the way, just waiting for Pentax to get their act together and deliver it to the dealer (and the lens to another, sigh).

I suspect it's similar to the rumor that Pentax was about go bust, that has repeatedly come out in the last 10 years. This sort of thing often starts with a salesman hoping to angle a potential client towards a system that give more commission.

I can see no reason why the management of Pentax would shoot themselves in the head like this. The K-r will probably continue to be sold alongside it's successor for at least a few months, as has been standard practice with other changes in the line-up.

It is probably coming to the end of it's life soon, but whether that is now is another matter.
Pentax rarely have more than two DSLR models on the go at any one time, and usually have an 18 month to 2 year turn round on models it seems to me.

There must be a PMA show coming up in early 2012. That is probably where a new model would be announced.

I ordered a 55-300 from them late last Saturday during their weekend price cut, and received it today. They had plenty then. Incidentally, they also had well over 50 K5s, just arrived. Sorry but I didn't ask about KRs.

That's a shame.

That means if my K-r gives up the ghost I'll have to change brands because I can't afford a K-5 even in my dreams.

They will be 400 in a few months (or moths in your case).

Moths - Good one Doug.

I'm wondering whether to ask FC to buy me a new one for Christmas just in case.

Either that or hope that they are replacing it and the price won't be too extortionate. Oooh I don't like having to make decisions like this - maybe I'll just go with the flow as per usual.

I'll not offer any more advice as, in my own experience, I'm usually expensively wrong on calling the camera market shots.
