I really think we are all wasting our time on these comparisons; as has been said many times already, comparing images on the web does not and can not indicate any 'real world' benefits. I also think that the statement quoted by Gary (Cabstar) above is a load of rubbish when it comes to the K-5IIs versus the K-5II. Please don't misinterpret what I'm saying here; I am not meaning to infer that Gary talks rubbish as he clearly does not, I am only referring to the quote he has provided and putting this into context with the K-5IIs and K-5II discussion. Both cameras are 'for making pictures' regardless of anyone pixel peeping or not.

For what it's worth, I'm absolutely sure that most K-5IIs owners don't spend their time pixel peeping their images; I certainly don't do this; I simply haven't got the time to waste. What I do is look at my images on my (very good) full HD screen, both as I'm processing them and afterwards, and also occasionally make prints on my high resolution Epson printer. I can categorically say (without any pixel peeping) that the resulting images look better from the K-5IIs than they do from the K-5 Mk1 in real world use (I don't have a K-5II). When I say they look better, I mean they just look sharper, crisper, more vibrant and these are fair comparisons because I shoot with the same lenses on both cameras so I have the ability to judge this. BTW all settings are identical on both bodies, so there is no possibility of any processing differences, unless Pentax have introduced something automatic we are not aware of. I also have 6 months of heavy usage, thousands of images shot, processed and reviewed to base this upon.

This is the last I will say about it as I think the subject is now completely worn out and before anyone asks, the answer is 'no I will not be providing any comparison images'!

Best wishes
David
But comparing the output of the mkiis against the mki is not the same as comparing it to the mkii. My mkii is miles sharper than my mki with the same lenses and the problem is apart from bettyswallocks who managed to test both side by side the majority of mkiis owners do not also own a mkii to cmpare against. I am sure if most owners did they would realise there is actually very little difference between there output. Like you i also use my mkii heavily shooting around 700 images a week. My main client asked me if i had changed camera, the week after i first delivered the images from the first session with the mkii as they where sharper and more vibrant and he is no photographer, he just noticed the difference, that I think shows how much difference there is between the mki and mkii/s bodies.

A good point is made here.

Also what needs to be realised is that although Gary has spent more money on kit that his client recognises as "better", I would feel sure that he was offered no more monies as a result of that. Hopefully he was?

I get to work alongside quite a few full time photographers over here and have covered several weddings, 99% of which are shot with Canon FF kit. You have to be really bad WRT image sharpness before a customer comments negatively.

The clients are not photographers and the process of providing well exposed, framed and presented images ranks far higher than absolute sharpness.

By all means, jump on board with new models for whatever reasons matter to you. In Gary's case, the low light AF was paramount.

As for low light, indoor, no flash shots, that capacity was filled several years ago by the big two along with fast glass. Pentax are slowly catching up which is never a bad thing. I still look forward to their real challenge to the rest of the industry as and when and if it appears.

Best regards

Indeed. This thread ( and Nigel's spin off thread ) is about the differences between the K-5II and K-5IIs. David insists that looking at the pictures isn't good enough and you must actually own and regularly use the camera to be able to offer a qualified opinion, yet he doesn't have a K-5II ??

Ok, trying to persuade the other half (Proving difficult! )
but it's got me thinking, I'm still intrigued by the K5II/IIs conundrum and have noted you guys efforts in trying to achieve the same sharpness/look between the two cameras...
So then if sharpness is the only real denominator and the lack of anti aliasing filter can be replicated and as we all have such marvellous software available, can anyone make the K5II Images look better than the "S"???

Should that then not be possible?

Just asking
Cheers Jules...

This is worth a read. Reviewer had both the II and IIs available, but chose to take the II on a trip. He explains why.

"With the Pentax K-5 IIs, moiré problems may not have struck for me quite as often as I had been worried that they might, but at the same time, the difference in sharpness was also rather more slight than I was expecting. Yes, when viewed at 1:1 the K-5 IIs clearly has an advantage over the K-5 II in per-pixel sharpness, but it's not a difference you're going to notice unless you're looking at your images very closely. Even then, a touch of unsharp masking on both images will often leave the K-5 II's result near-indistinguishable from that shot with the K-5 IIs."

Hmm if 24"x16" prints look the same I could save myself £150!

Well it depends on how good the photographer was, what the subjects were, etc.

It's so easy to be influenced by half thoughts, random comments, etc. which are made without any thought to the influence they may have.

But only buy the IIs if you understand and require the advantages it will bring. However, having said that, it would seem to be the way things are going so one day there may be no choice.

very true and well put John!
My conundrum is do I get an S model for landscapes and await the sports model that was mentioned by Pentax's Head honcho's for more general and long lens stuff? I'd not want to use an S at an Air show as I feel a Radial Engine etc. would just be a cast for Moiré (Pun intended!)
Yes and, I know I know about wishing on a star and vapour ware etc.
They did say it was coming though...

You could be right Mike!
I'm doing my own head in with it!
Think I've decided to just get one body for now which will then have to be the "II" to be used for all types of shooting, which makes sense, I'll await new bodies that if I don't like will leave me the option of an "s" model new or second hand when the time is right...

Unless that new model has a bang on Autofocus system then I could forgive quite a lot for that...
