K5d or D300s

hello.
I come here asking for advice about the Pentax K5, I'm interested in it, but I wonder if it is fast enough for sports, and other photography in general.
Nikon D300s is also a good proposal, has 12mgpixel very fast, and I'm a little undecided on what to buy.
On the one hand cost me much to leave the Pentax, because I like it, I have a K10D and I have taken great pictures with it, and learned a lot from her, but its AF is not the best, and often fails in sports.
I would like to have an opinion yours.

Bearing in mind this is a Pentax forum, the likelihood is that youi'll find it difficult to find many people with a really extensive knowledge of Nikon.

I can tell you that the Nikon is heavy and bulky compared to the Pentax K-5. I can also tell you that it has its own quirks and troubles, but no more than any other DSLR.

Yes the K-5 is fast enough. A manual focus camera is fast enough for motorsports - the technique that works is to prefocus on part of the track and practice until you can release the shutter at the right moment. Accounting for shutter-lag and our own reaction time, that's just a whisker before the subject arrives at the critical point. No AF required at all. It's all about technique and practice.

ten quite right, I've been comparing the two Dslr Dpreview in and saw that the D300s, has no great advantage in the K5, so I adquerir the K5.
Also I've read here in the forum of some problems in sensor K5, but the Pentax is to repair it at no cost to their owners.
I hope within will soon post pictures with my K5 ....

The K5 is still a great camera for sports (I've used it for X-Games, Rugby, Tennis and Golf) however if your only priority is the AF then the Nikon D300s wins with 51 to 11 focus points and more cross types (15 to 9).

That said the K5 has much better high ISO, more MP (for cropping), better DR, lower noise, more colour depth, less shutter lag, HD video, it's lighter and smaller and has in-camera image stabilisation.

Compared to the price the K-5 is far better, i know someone who only uses
this D300 for studio work as it is far to heavy for moving around.

I have used the K5 to shoot the recently concluded Singpore Airshow 2012.

Pics are taken with the DA18-135 and a loaned DAL 55-300.

One can learn to do panning shots and all the shots in the link are panned.

The Pentax KR also has 12mp in a low noise Sony sensor. Very quick at 6 frames a second and the AF is much more intelligent and quick than say the KX which preceded it.

I've not seen any cameras which have the compactness and ergonomics of Pentax in APS C. John's right though we're all biased!

felix, no offense, but picture you are displaying doesn't show anything good about K-5 in this context.

Nsantos if you want camera that responds quickly then still D300 is better choice, especially with a choice of fast focusing lenses (don't forget Pentax SDM is just slow) to compliment better tracking AF in Nikon.

The cloud may be why the picture is not very sharp or contrasty, but Piotro is correct that it doesn't show the K5 at its best.

Thanks Piotro, will load another pic instead. Was panning the shots with a DAL55-300. Looks like I need to invest in a faster 70-200 lens. kekeke.

Nsantos, the sensor issue occurred in an early batch of cameras, and was fixed promptly by Pentax. It has not recurred.

Piotro is probably right in saying that the Nikon, when equipped with the right lens, may be faster than the K5. However, the right lens will not be cheap, and the gap is much narrower than it used to be. If sport with long lenses is the only purpose of this camera, and money no object, then the Nikon may be the better bet. In virtually every other respect, you would be better off (and have more money left over) if you choose the K5.
