k5 video stuff.

As long as you record under 30mins there is no EU video tax, hence why lots of cameras are limted to 29m.

I hacked my gf1 to remove this limit and can record video till I run out of space or battery .

Shooting short movie's the video limit even on the k5 isn't really something to worry about as most of the shots are really quick.. if you were recording event's then it could be a problem.

So John, are you saying that the K7 & K5 do not have 'electronic rolling shutter' control by the user in order to avoid being taxed more highly as a 'video' camera as opposed to a still camera?

And usuqa, are you saying that the K5II now has such 'electronic shutter control'?. If so, does anyone know how you actually change this setting on the camera?

The k-30 does have full manual options on video.

It's downfall though compared to other brands is the relatively low bit rates / high compression used when storing the video. Forgetting hacked options, only available on more popular brands such as canon and Panasonic, the k-30 bit rate is much lower than the others all out of the box.

Pentax features fairly regularly in modern dslr film making, but unfortunately mostly from an older lens point of view, not in terms of their currently electronics offerings.

With the advent of 4k starting to take off, the dslr will soon not be the first choice for this type of work.

Still, get creating really. One shouldn't be too limited by their tools

They all have electronic shutters, the tax is related to camera's that can record 30mins+ of video in one take.

The black magic pocket camera is only 1080p and an even smaller sensor than m4/3 (even though it uses the m4/3 mount) it will no doublt be a great camera and record much better detail than most dslr's although the recent canon RAW video hack will have an impact on there sales but there are people wanting to use the new sigma 18-35 f1.8 with a speed booster on the black magic. There cinema camera records in 2.2k? which isn't much more than 1080p but leaves room for cropping later if you wish.

I have no doubt that things will move to 4k but giving the file sizes involved I think for a lot of people 1080p will still be the sweet spot for years to come, also given that it will take a while for 4k tv's to become the norm, hell I still know people who watch standard def programs.

It's a shame there has been no hacks for pentax stuff, I think the best quality of video from the current crop of pentax camera's is still with the k5 as its AVI can record around 100 Mbit/s but it comes with the limitations like no manual mode, over heating, crazy file sizes.

If Ricoh/Pentax were to give us a firmware update for the k5 to get manual controls and let the auto horizion feature work in video I would be super happy and we would have a great video dslr.

Yeah the limit is on the length of non stop recording you can do.
If its capable of more than 30 mins then it's classed as a video camera, and falls into a different tax section?!

On a DSLR the physical shutter holds up/stays open for the duration of your video recording.
As mentioned above you want more movement blur in each shot than if you were taking just a single still frame shot.
Otherwise you get quite stuttery video in the end.

All in all I've been really impressed with the k-30s video performance, but know the hardware is probably capable of so much more. Why no focus peaking during video recording for example?

Yes the example linked to was indicative only. There is a whole indie film making world out there and I wish pentax cameras feature more in it. Most if what is desired is firmware related.

Much larger file sized avi files are actually easier to edit though, as the editing software doesn't have to uncompress the file on the fly when you are working with them. So in some respects that's a bonus

the work around to full manual on the kr (and so presumably k5 as well) is this...
I shoot using manual lenses and then set my exposure and color balance (usually with a grey card) and then hit the exposure lock button to lock it all down. the old m lenses have a superb feel when focussing.

does not give you "full manual" per se but does lock the exposure.

my current film project here for those on facebook..

Thanks for the update Paul. I would guess the K-01 is best used for video with SR turned off and on a decent tripod or rig. I'll check out the file format options available.

I've come to that conclusion after recently recording some video on the K30 (while walking backwards) that had annoying jerks in it. (Not the person I was filming - I mean the footage itself! )

The mechanical SR (e.g. on the K7) used to be perfect for that sort of thing. What a shame.

The big advantage that *even Pentax* DSLRs have over supposedly better P&S cameras and iPhones etc, is being able to use good lenses and having that DOF which comes with a larger sensor. This has much more impact (in a positive way) than a little bit of compression etc. Instantly looks 'professional' (although it seems everyone on Youtube are shooting video on DSLRs these days).

Maybe NEX / MFT cameras are a bit better, but not everyone wants to have a second camera system for video.

be nice if pentax gave us the option of selecting sensor shake SR or "silent mode SR" for video shooting...

That would be great, as the MovieSR (the silent version) would have its uses (ie if you had no external mic).

All it would take for pentax to have great dslr video would be an option to people would be to add manual mode to the k5's and let the auto horizon work too (as this would help keep the footage lvl and dampen rotational shake).

As for the k-01 and k30, k50 allow you to switch into sensor stabilization and let you pick AVI or higher bitrates for movie recording.

I bet pentax would have sold a lot of units for people doing video, who wouldn't want a weather sealed camera that had nice video and stabilized any lens fitted to it (like fast primes).. and it would be the only system to be able to stabilize the new sigma 18-35 f1.8 which would be a great video lens.

If it was me, Id be kicking myself in the head for not doing software updates that could potentially sell quite a few units and also make exciting customers happy, they have probably lost quite a bit of revenue and could have had a great video following just for updating software.. its silly.

As it is.. the new em-1 from Olympus seems like a good bet, better stabilization, EVF similar in size to some FF cameras, can use many more lens including focal reducers like the metabones and has f0.95 prime lens available and lots of nice first party lens from both panasonic and Olympus themselves.

I really do love my pentax stuff, but its getting ever more tempting to switch over.. I'm hoping for something wonderful as a proper k5 replacement

a number of pro video magazines have taken notice of the k-30 for the weather sealing... the k-30 and a weather sealed prime is absolutely the best bargain out there for nature video shooters...
