Finally got round to doing mine....and it's fine! Clean as a clean thing that has just been cleaned (and then cleaned again to make sure.)

That'll be 3.5% then

Well it sounds like some of the Sensor issues are just down to needing a tiny clean but seem to have caused some moral panic. I guess people just think, my camera is new, I should not need to clean it if that was the problem. For other people they may have thought I have a problem i will send it off. Anyway what ever the problem was, is, lets just hope this does not spoil the reputation of such a great camera. I have checked mine about 3 times now and cant see anything wrong with it, so I am happy and lucky I guess. Although Pentax may have been a little slow to sort things out, at least they are addressing it, which is more than can be said for most companies when their is a problem.

My dealer told me that the main problem is that most people just
don't know how to take the camera out of the box, even
though there are several videos on youtube showing how to!

hate to point this out... but a poll on a brand forum isn't going to be anywhere near representative of the market share.
But you don't know that. - You're just making more assumptions

You can be argumentative if you choose, but unless you are factoring ACTUAL sales and ACTUAL problems all you are doing is guessing, and at that it is very unscientific.
I've never claimed it to be scientific, but the polls at both forums are the ONLY evidence we have.

It doesn't matter if the non-serious K-5 owner hasn't checked their copy or noticed a fault. The fact is that just over 50% of owners who have answered the polls on both forums have the fault.

Any extrapolation from this, is of course a guesstimate. And yes this could be limited to a couple of early production runs. In fact it's obvious Pentax is going to fix the issue so in the future the number of affected bodies will be close to zero

the polls are of forum members which do not represent the majority of consumers who bought a camera.
Extrapolating from a Poll of real results, is IMO going to be more accurate than the statement above which is irrelevant to the issue at hand. The camera bodies are going to be sold at random to either series shooters or non-serious shooters. Whatever that means. So there's no reason why the findings of people who frequent forums cannot be extrapolated across the board.

Besides there's probably lots of serious shooters who don't frequent forums as well.

for example you could take a poll at a party for season ticket holders at an american football leagues pre-season warm up party and come to the conclusion you know who will win the Superbowl... (because they're the most dedicated and often biased fans to poll).
That's not even a close analogy as that poll would be asking peopel to make a prediction, not asking them if there camera actually has a fault.

Anyway, all I am doing is pointing out the only evidence we have which can be, albeit not perfectly, extrapolated from. in contrast to claims it's only around 5% which has no rationale other than hearsay to support it.

No big deal.

Well it is a big deal... I've a vested interest. I'm about to plunk £1000 down on a K-5 in the next few weeks. I want a handle on the closest to reality of the situation as I can.

C'mon.Give Stephan some credit.... he'd be out there knocking on doors and testing peoples cameras, and documenting his results, as well as producing links to more sites to support his position... to win an argument... wait a minute... where is Stephan?
Fired many shots. Didn't kill anything.

No idea where Stefan is, but give him credit for caring about what he does. You may or may not agree with him, but he has a passion for his photography and I have to respect that.

On the other forum the last two posts state that:

========South Africa===================
Wednesday 20101215
The service center confirmed the issue (after trying to clean it again). They advised the agent and I can pickup a new one at the dealer on Friday or Saturday.

Friday 20101217
Stock is 'infected'; agent ordered new stock so I have to wait till after the holiday

=========London====================================

The camera shop which I got my K5 from 2wks ago has returned their entire stock to Pentax. It's a big place too; both mail order and retail.

Sounds a lot more than 5% to me

Checked my K5 (early s/n 3827xx from SRS). Sensor is clean but for a few insignificant marks; lesser versions of the ones seen on this forum. I would never have noticed these marks had this topic not been raised and they will present no problem to me in the future because they are essentially invisible. I dare say my istDs and my K-m (great cameras both) have similar marks also - not checked them.

Please forgive me for what I am going to say but you should think of the future and not only of your present purpose for your camera. You may find that in the future you want to make large scale prints for one reason or the other and it may become then an issue.
Also you would have to mention this fault (no matter how small) should you go to sell the camera on (and don't say you never would, as you never know what is around the corner and god forbid but it may be your only way of raising funds), this will significantly lower the resale value of the camera.
That is why I already say that I will not buy a second hand K-5 unless it comes from a retailer where I would get an issue with the camera like this sorted, because you did nothing in the first place about the issue and for me it would be of significant impact of having even the smallest fault on the sensor.
this is why some people already warning for the resale value of the k-5. If you got an issue, no matter how small or insignificant it is to you at the moment, get a clean replacement from SRS, you paid good £££ for your K-5 and should not put up with an issue never mind if it bothers you or not.
I sincerely hope that you take this comment as it is meant to be and not personal at all!
Kind regards
SmutjeUK

It's nice to be nice!

Although I checked this at the shop and when I got it home and reported 'all clear' in the poll... however after about 230 shots:
