K5 or K30

I was camera-hunting for a good whole month, spend hours and hours reading dependent and independent reviews, calculating cons and pros and listening to Pentax lovers and Pentax haters. Finally decision is made: I will go with K-5. Released in 2010 (so as Nikon D7000 and Canon 60D) Pentax K-5 still have better appeal to me over K-30. Mind you- I am a novice but three factors that give thumbs up to K-5 (from amateur point of view):

1. It is thoroughly tested and reviewed by almost every imaginable pro- and anti-Pentax group, publication or individual. It have came out in almost every single review with 4 to 4.5 stars out of 5. You simply can't fault it. K-30, on the other hand yet have to score it's points.

2. K-30 already have gathered army of it's admirers and of course camera's aggressive outdoorsy looks and do-it-all functions would most likely appeal to people who perhaps want to have a taste of DSLR movie-making or simply want a small but robust, up-to-date technologically, secondary DSLR . Myself, I always expect my photo camera to be ready work hard for great photos and not average videos (all these quality rigs and add-ons on ANY DSLR neither are comfortable nor they making any economic sense as they too often outsource the cost of decent semi-/ or- professional video camera). So in a nutshell, K-30 does not appeal much as a photographer's camera (call me close-minded).

3. Controls: K-5 is a definite "YES", K-30 is just a "MAY BE".

If I didn't really, really want focus peaking, I would definitely be going for the K5!

FWIW I'm not really bothered about nit-picking differences in the movie modes on these cameras, but I do love the quality of DSLR video - much better than the quality of dedicated video cameras unless you spend a LOT of $$$!

Almost on the point of getting the K5 (the cash back sounds good) but can you explain what focus peaking is. Don't think I've heard of that as a newcomer.

The focus peaking mode was something they brought in on the K-01; basically it's a manual focus aid for when focusing in live-view. Will be great for using manual lenses (which I have a lot of!)

I am sorry if I misquoted the quality of DSLR videos (I have a very vague idea about the topic). Surely there is a lot of appeal in DSLR video for many people. I just being old-fashioned and not keen on keeping all eggs in same basket No offence to those who feel opposite

Boiler? Who needs a boiler when the temperature is around 30C all the time? Admittedly, when I lived in UK, a boiler breakdown was a major calamity!

Meanwhile, in more informed communities?

Tepid warm water systems distribute or recirculate warm water at temperatures conducive to the growth of Legionella (nominally 45'C).


So unless you can achieve 60'C at some point which can then mixed with cold water to a comfortable level or use a chemical treatment, you may be at risk.

anyhow, I still plan to purchase the k5 before the end of the month if money allows..

I can't wait to have it but sometimes you have to wait..

You are not necessairly waiting for the launch date - most people wait, until they are sure to not buy a camara with betha bugs (like the dirty sensors of the first K5 bodies) and with a price, that can only be that high, because it is brandnew. In addition - you first might want to let some persons test the whole thing to see, if it is really worth buying it - so it might be, that you have to wait another 6 or even more months. I just got the K5 together with a 18-135mm for 1066 Euro - regarding what I get, it is a price that I find absolutely acceptable. With a K3 (or however the new semi-pro will be named) I might have to invest 1200 just for the body. Hence - for me it was a good time to get a K5 and I now probably have to wait for the K1

I'm waiting until I get back from Aberdeen (next week) to get a K5, probably my "last" camera although I said that about the K7 (that was at end of life too)

The K-30 is an interesting camera - should appeal to the more youthful amongst us, but I'm a bit of an old fogie, and more than happy with the wonderful K-5.

However if it comes down to cost - think K-5, the price has fallen stateside, down to £572 ($899). Surely it will drop here too.

But I still don't mind that I paid £1,000 a year ago - it has more than repaid that sum by the delight it gives in use.

I bought a K-5 yesterday here in Oz for A$799 - that was too good to resist!
