That was the plan - but I thought I'd try something else if anyone could come up with some weird reset sequence.
The obvious thing is see if the battery has just discharged in someway, so I have stuck on the charger (which I didnt know I had with me as I have the small kit back with me today)
..OK battery has been on charge for just short of 5 mins and just put in the camera.
Shes alive...SHE'S ALIVE!!!
Battery is showing as fully charged and firmware is v1.11
Absolutely NO idea what went wrong there. I'd left the battery out previously for a bit to power down the camera (as suggested in other threads). Battery was charged overnight so I know it was full (as it currently shows after only 5 mins of charge)
Well- Im relieved but this seems to be another 'querky' K5 freeze up issue.
I just hope the next low light shoot has improved focussing or I'll think I was better off with v1.01
Thanks for the response Mike - it was looking like my only option. Guess I'll never get to find out how honest I was going to be.

Yup. I thought an update from a japanese site may have been my error - but its the same file on the UK site. Not sure if there were specifically European style K5s, or having already set my time zone (UK) and language there may have been a specific update that was then needed for the area I'd defined on a default camera.
Just have to search these forums for recommended second batteries to cover me in future.

Just checked the PC and Mac files at the link you gave and
the internal files are identical.
I also checked against one I DL'd on the 14/7/11 and that's
the same so the file seems correct.
The Zip file can be used on a Mac or PC. It's probably just
the self-extracting EXE that won't work on a Mac.
If you have the facilities it's always worth checking
the file you copy to the SD Card is identical to the one
on your PC after the copy.

Thanks Algernon. Seems to have gone on OK but I've had the camera die a couple of times now which is fixed by putting the battery on the charger for a few seconds and replacing in the camera. Just taking it out and leaving it then replacing is not working. I really dont understand whats going on there and am frankly worried that my new camera is not going to be much use on a photo job and Im back to the GX10.

You probably need to return the camera for replacement. You shouldn't have to mess about to get it to work.
Best regards, John

Buy a cheap battery and see if it's the same with that.
Also search the US Pentax forum for battery problems. I seem
to remember K-5's behaving strange depending on if they had
a full or half-charged battery.
It does sound as though you need to get the whole thing
exchanged.
The K-5 is an excellent camera, but quite a few have needed
changing.

Hmm suppose it could be the camera connection to the battery. After a massive pallava with Jessops to get it in the first place (had none about and then one that was found was sold after Id ordered it). Jessops is not that convenient to reach for me but with the amount of money spent it'll be worth it. I'll let you guys know the outcome

Bit awkward as I had a load of Jessops & Capital bond vouchers about so I actually got the camera body for £370.
what would be the benefit of SRS? At least with Jessops I can walk into a store and talk to someone rather than an online sale.

You said taking it back to Jessops was inconvenient, SRS would have probably just picked it up and sent a new one.

Just got a new K5 from Jessops with firmware 1.01. Did a shoot out on a night out on Friday and no issues (except maybe focussing). Thought I'd update the firmware especially after reading the low light focusing issue comments.
Latest looks to be v1.11 which I got from http://www.pentax.jp/english/support/digital/k-5_s.html
I had a fully charged battery and followed the instructions. On the rear display I saw UPDATING and phase 1/2 and then phase 2/2, before seeing COMPLETED with the red light flashing.
I switched off, removed the SD card with the update and switched back on.....nothing...no power at all
I have left the battery out for 5 minutes and replaced and still nothing. Tried with and without the SD card, and with and without the firmware file on the card. With and without holding MENU - and all combinations of the above...
Camera is dead.
I cant find on google any similar problems. Any views/comments/actions to take?
Thanks
Bob
