Just for reference purpose for those who are interested, after a year of senseless tests and 1000's of photos wasted, I finally resolved my focus issues with he k5. I originally thought it was my 16-50 but thankfully enough Pentax Italy in Turin verified through the computer system they have there that it was an AF sensor fault. I am so happy. All my lenses have come back to life. If you have a k5 out there and your not sure if it's performing at your expectations take it in to Pentax for a check up.

Great outcome there in the end.

I'm sure there are many out there like this, not just K-5s that many people blame their cheap lens or poor technique.
I would hope that all bodies are AF checked before leaving the factory so at least initial photos are good and focused before an AF fault occurs.. At least then you know there's something wrong with the body.

The crazy thing is I have been blaming my lenses and doubting myself over the last few years. I really thought that my photography was going down hill and have started to loose the passion. It just shows you how God damn important neat focus is
